4" BDS Lift Problem
So, I got my 4" BDS lift in today and I was excited to get it put on. I started with the front and managed to finally get the old springs off and started with the new spring install as well as ss braided brake hoses and sway bar disconnects. I got the front springs installed only to find that the springs are too short. I am having the same issue that many people had with their Rough Country lifts in the past with the springs being so short that the shackles either bottom out or sit at a 45 degree angle rather than at a 90 degree angle like they should. I sent an email to BDS this evening, but I am not happy to be taking the springs off again plus waiting for correct springs to come in. I have not gotten the rears on yet.

Pictures of my shackles:

Those just look way too much arched.

I know my stocks are flat but those pics make it look like it would add a good 6-8 inches of lift to mine.

I would suggest calling BDS first thing tomorrow morning. I wouldn't wait for an email.

They are great to work with....

Those shackles look like stock length. If you don't get some longer ones you'll never get full flex on the springs.

I recieved a prompt reply from BDS this morning inquiring about more information about my situation, then Ted called me shortly after. I informed him of the problem. He said that it was a very uncommon problem and checked to make sure that everything was correct for my model, then said to loosten all hardware and then flex the suspension to the max and that is should settle in. I put a jack under the each front corner then jacked it up until the tire on the other side came off of the ground as well. The pictures below are what the suspension looks like now. I think that after the springs have a few miles on them and settle in, they should be fine. Any Opinions?

any update

I finally got everything together, and after flexing everything out, the springs seem to have settled in perfect. Seems to be very stable on the road and has a better ride than it did before. Here are before and after pictures with the 4" BDS Lift and 31x10.50-15 tires. I hope to have my hands on some 33's before too long.

When you stand on the front bumper and bounce do the shackles move in or out?

They'll settle more. I've lost an inch in the past 2 months on my CJ7 with the 4" BDS kit. Extra weight seems to help. I suggest placing 80lb sand bags in front of your grill and on the rear seat for a week.

Also, these things do flex a lot, so you might want to check your rear bump stops to keep from tearing up that nice tub and fenders when you go 33"... You'll probably need 2" longer in the rear unless you go TJ flares.

Yeah, I plan on new bump stops soon. I still have a few things that I have to work out before I am back 100%. I have the front driveshaft tied to the frame right now because the exhaust is in the way due to the different angle. I have to get the exhaust modified as well as do a tie rod flip. All in all though, I am very happy with the results.

What you mean other lifts other then RC's settle????? OMG! alert everyone......

there was a problem and you were able to contact the manufacture and got helpfull information????? i thought only RC had problems with their lift kits and everyone else was perfect...

Anyway sarcasam off.....

Looks nice, definately 33's in your future. I have HD shackles with about 3/4" in them and allmost thinking about going to 35's vs. 33's beacuse the difference is only like $10 a tire. Alread have my rear fenders trimmed for a little more room.

The time now is 08:04 PM.
