4.0 Head Swap need help ASAP

I am going to do the 4.0 head swap on my 83 CJ5 but need these questions answered...

1. Will the head from an 87 Fuel Injected 4.0 Jeep Cherokee work?
2. Will I need the Intake manifolds or the push rods?

Thanks
Jeff

An 87 head is not the High Output head you're looking for. Instead of going by year, go by casting# 0630 or 7120 heads only.

You can use your existing CJ intake manifold.

You'll need 4.0L pushrods.

It seems every time I find a good used head something is missing. The latest one I have found doesn't have rocker arms. What makes up a complete head? Can someone give me a checklist of what is needed for a complete head.

Rocker arms and pushrods are separate. The head will just come with the valve springs.

So if I pickup a 4.0 head, what else will I need to make the swap to my 4.2? (Besides valve cover and exhaust manifold)

Also, I have been doing some research and some people are saying I can use the rockers and pushrods from the 258. Any input?

You'll need to fill the water jackets in the new head, power steering brackets, gasket set, ....

you can use the 258 rockers and bridges but if you use the pushrods you will need to shim the rockers. I think it works out to .030 but don't remember exactly.

I'm in the process of doing this now. Some write ups say you'll need to grind away some of the power steering bracket. Once I get my head on I'll know for sure.

John, that depends if you use a header or a cherokee exhaust manifold. You may get lucky as I used a header and had to do a little fab work.
