4.0 head conv question.....

Allright, I'm doing the 4.0 head conv. for my 79 258....I got a 92 head from a 4.0, casting #7120, & a stock exhaust manifold from a 94 Cherokee with a 4.0. I've been referencing Tim Weavers article & Tony Carricaburu's article on the swap--BUT--even though BOTH articles say I can use my existing intake, the D#@!% thing will not clear the 2 center exhaust pipes off of the manifold so that I can bolt it down......I'm talking inches here.....So should I beat the pipes in a little, & grind alot of off the intake to get to where I need to be? Anyone got any insite? Or should I just fork out the extra cash & head back to the scrap yard & get the stock injected intake off of the 94 Cherokee? Money is tight, but i'm getting pissed! Any help or anyone elses experiences with this would be appreciated.....Thanks.....

A head is a head. There isn't a carb'd head or a FI head.

Might be differences in the intake for different model years. Other options are to get the FI manifold and harness from a donor. Not too expensive but will require some work splicing all the sensors in. Option 2 is to get a carb'd manifold made for the 4.0 head from Clifford. They run about $300 but will bolt right up.

Or get an intake from an 85 or 86 CJ because the design is slightly different and you'll only have to dent the exhaust tubes slightly to get them to mate flush with the head.

I had the same friggin problem when I did mine with a 4.0L Borla exhaust header.

I'm using 92 head as well (no idea what the casting number is- doesn't matter as long as it 92 and up) and wrangler stock exhaust manifolds, I had to grind the intake manifold bolt hole a bit until it fit.

Will the carb intake fit on the 4.0 head? That is what I think I meant on the above post

When you do this swap, you are taking your current intake manifold with the carb attached to it (or fuel injection unit) and bolting it on to the 4.0L head.

The only two snags that people have are trimming the intake manifold with a grinder and denting the exhaust tubes on the 4.0 exhaust header or manifold so that they fit...and the 2nd thing is fabricating a power steering bracket because the stock one will not clear the 4.0L exhaust.

I'm using the 4.0L header but didn't had to fabricate a steering pump bracket. it's sit a bit higher than with the stock head but other than that it fit.

thanks...

Thanks for the input guys......I'll try denting the exhaust & grinding the intake some more...--it just makes me nervous to grind it down to much.....The intake is from my 79 & its Carb. by the way....Also, to anyone who's done this swap, I called my local mopar parts dealer with the part # for the head bolt set that's listed in the articles, & it comes up ns3 (no longer available). There are 3 diff. head bolt options for a stock 4.0 head to 4.0 block set up, 1 that's 3.75" long, 1 thats 4.25" long, & 1 that's got studs (studs above the bolt head)....Anyone got an inside line on where I can find the bolt set listed in the articles (part #4529204), or can anyone tell me what length bolts they used for their set up? Thanks again!
