If I wanted a 350 in something I'd have a Chevy. Wait I do. Hope my truck don't get mad. Seriously all everybody does is throw a 350 in anything. Stay AMC. Someone asked me if I was gonna swap in a 350, told them no. Then I would need a tranny t-case, axles, wheels etc....If a wanted a chevy powered jeep I'd put a body on a 1 ton

This will probably piss off most everybody but there's a reason that the AMC is extinct.

I agree.
If you decide to build the AMC engine, do the oiling mod.

Oh i almost forgot, prepare to spend $ to build it correctly.

It's a long read, but start here.

A 401 is nice, but autozone remans are stock.

Look here and you can spend 2500 and still have 1000 left for adapter and mounts.

Even more options here.

Not arguing by any means if you want AMC then that is a great decision as well.

Don't forget a 4.0 out of tj xj or zj They make good power, and are easy swaps. Fairly affordable too.

Just finished completely rebuilding my 304. Did everything, good parts from Bulltear, oil mods, Edl intake, ARP fasteners, ported heads, HEI, machine work... on and on. If I could go back in time I would take that $3,000.00 and put it toward your 350 or even a nice LS swap. There's something to staying with AMC if you're restoring to stock, but you look like you use that CJ. Just sayin'...

AMC motors are not extinct. They just get rebuilt and are stronger than ever.

Agreed. There are so many reasons why everyone goes with a 350.

Because they are lazy.. #1 reason. They don't want to take the time to properly research rebuilding a AMC motor and have the attitude of "I'll just take the easy way out and put a dime a dozen 350 in it"

The only thing worse is an old 30s-40s Ford truck at a car show with a GM 350 in it... the person who built it needs to be slapped

Best thing I ever did was put a Chevy crate motor in my Jeep. More than enough power and way cheaper than putting a AMC motor in it :/

Amen!

If you can track down a core, there are companies online that will sell you a reman'ed 360 in the $2k range. I know I have seen some on ebay with solid feedback scores. I have never dealt with them so I can't speak to their quality, but at least it's an option worth running down.

I went 360 in my CJ; despite the challenges, I am glad I did.

Good luck!
