360 or 350

I have a 78 CJ7 with a 304. I really like the 304 and I love the sound of it, but I just don't think I can get the power out of it that I want. I want to buy an AMC 360 or a Chevy 350 that I can have rebuilt. I already have the Turbo 400 tranny so the 350 would be easy, but I kind of want to stay with the AMC brand. What do you guys think?

Any comments are appreciated.

To go with a GM motor, you would have to swap in a different transmission. The Turbo 400 in there now has a AMC bellhousing pattern. I would build a AMC 360 and drop in there. Nothing to change. Put a HEI ignition system on it, a good carb (I run a Quadrajet) and wheel it. Too much stuff has to be changed to put a chebby motor in there.

Beat it to fit, paint it to match!

Wheel, Wrench, Repeat.

a 360 will be much easyer to complete with your current set up i agree

To go with the 350, you'll need a new transmission which means a new tcase and a centered rear axle. You might could cut the bell off a GM TH400 and graft it to yours. That may not be an option, just trying to think outside the box.

Rebuilding an AMC360 isn't cheap, so I would try to find a running one in decent shape. its a direct bolt in from the 304.

Huh... I just assumed at a Turbo 400 bolted right up to a 350. I agree the 360 is probably a better option. Thanks guys. Now I just have to find one...

A Turbo 400 with the Chevy bolt pattern and bellhousing shape will bolt up to the 350. The one you have has the AMC bellhousing shape and bolt pattern. All TH400s are not the same.

You can take the tailhousing and output shaft from an AMC TH400 and swap them into a Chevy TH400 and keep your existing transfer case and axles. This does require complete disassembly of both transmissions though.

I d go for the 360. I replaced my tired 360 for a new 350 and it just doesnt feel the same. On paper the 350 is beter but my heart doesn t agree. My other cj still has a 360 and that s the one I like to drive the most.

I would look for a 401. There are so many variants of the Chevy 350 made that you could, in theory, end up with one that has less HP than your 304. If you can't find a 401 then I agree with the 360.

I would rather have a tool I don't need, than need a tool I don't have.

Why not just rebuild the 304 and add heads, intake, headers and be done. It would likely be cheaper and easier for sure.

It's not worth rebuilding a 304, I know I did it. Yes you can get ok power out of it but not even close to a 360/401 for the same price. Buy a 360 or a 401 if you are going to rebuild one and be done with it.

I'll agree that the 360-401 will put out more power - I also rebuilt my 304 several years ago. But you still have to find a decent 360 or 401 to start. You have to factor that expense in too. If you have a buddy willing to give it to you then your okay but everone these days seems to think they and the 401 are forged from gold or something.

Make a list of all three projects, Total the price of each and then you can weigh your options.
I wanted to go AMC, but there are not many to be had in my neck of the woods.
