258 squeals
...and it's annoying the crap out of me. it's a squeaking/squealing sound, very high-pitched.
it started today on the drive to work. i can't determine where exactly it's coming from, but it's somewhere near the middle/rear of the engine. possibly near the carb (original carter). it doesn't change with higher RPMs, although it gets a bit lower in pitch when the engine is under load (accelerating/going up a hill) and i think it goes away completely while accelerating hard but at that point the noise from the engine would drown it out anyway, so i can't be entirely sure. it's LOUD. and besides making me envy the deaf it's probably something i should fix sooner, rather than later. any ideas?

Vacuum leaks like thru a gasket or split hose will make a squeal like you described

A ccouple of carb mounting bolts worked loose on my boat carb and it made a loud squeal. The gasket was acting like a reed in a musical instrument. Also check belts to make sure they are good.

I had that problem with mine a couple years ago. Found out the manifold bolts were all lose. 10 minutes with a torque wrench fixed it.

thanks, i'll check both of those. that's the general area the noise is coming from so i hope that's it.

Are you sure it is coming from under the hood? I had something similar, and it ended up being the Speedo Cable squeaking.

it's coming from that general area... when i open the hood it gets louder. i still can't pinpoint where exactly it's coming from though. in other news, me speedometer DID stop working a few days before this happened... |

it's a leak in the intake manifold gasket. i tried to put some RTV on there but it didn't work too well... replacing the gasket would do it. hope that helps.

The I6 long manifolds are known for loosening up and leaking. Start in the center and work you way out in a circular pattern. Just snug all up by hand, then snug with sockets. Then 7, 10, 15, 20, till you reach 23 ft#. After you have run the jeep several times and had some temp cycles. Retorque them again. They like to warp, loosen up, and not seat right. Torque wrench and this process is the only way to go. Ck the manifolds and carb every couple of years or so. Hope that helps, Fred |

2X on retorquing. Do it again after a week or so, too. I waited about two weeks before doing it the third time and a few of them were starting to loosen up. My squealing was coming from the intake manifold as well.
