258 smokes when warmed up not when cold, smells like oil, does not billow, just steady flow. Valve seals or piston rings? This Jeep has done some sitting.
Time for a compression test wet and dry. Valve seats, guides, or rings. Valve seals would let it smoke on start up and it would mostly go away after it burned off any oil that dripped down there. Mine with bad seals only smoked for a minute or two on start up.
I will definitely do that, but as I look more at this, the smoke really seems to be coming mostly from the exhaust manifold where it meets the pipe in the engine comparmtent. It's almost like it's overheating (I have no working temp gauge so it could be) except coolant seems to be flowing. I am going to try capping of the heater system in case there is a leak where it goes through the manifold and that's what's burning.
