258 Rebuild Cost?
Does anyone know the approximate cost of rebuilding a 258 I6? Assuming someone else does it and includes new intake / exhaust valve stem seals and new piston rings. Any suggestions on what to replace other than what I've mentioned?

I rebuilt mine about 5 years ago. Had the block tanked and the cylinders bored. Didin't need the head work. Master rebuild kit. Turned the crank. Had to put in a cam & new pistons. It ran about $700 with me doing the assembly.

If you are rebuilding, you should also consider a 4.0 head swap.

I just completed a rebuild about 2 months ago. One of the guys at work took it out and re-assembled it. We sent it off to get everything done, they cleaned, polished, ground......... We put in top of the line parts and replaced the water pump before putting it back in. The total cost was about $1,500.00.

Can you tell me who did the work? I assume you didn't have it done locally.

Try ATK motors. Great crate motor for $1500.00.

Where's is it located and can you tell me more about it? Long or short block? Why are you selling? What's the 'good, bad, & ugly' on the motor?

I paid 1500 for mine as well is was a total rebuild. New guides in head, seals etc... a replacement crank...., new cam, excellent job.
Compaired to the Crate Motor from AJ's Machine and Marine the new motor was a rolex watch and AJ's was a 3 dollar HO-Chi-Min watch from wallmart. You're a little far away for Pete to do one for you. |

I just put a Groom reman motor in my CJ....I think it was like $1400 and for another $160 I got a life time warranty.....not a bad deal in my opinion.....they are based in Nashville.

Bump.
So the consensus way back in 06 here is that your professionally rebuilt 258 (from a reputable shop) is better than these 1500 a pop crate engines you see all over. Why? They run those crate engines through the rebuild like a mill?

For a stock application, I think the the professionally rebuilt 258 is better because you get higher quality parts. I just went through a tear down of my "re-manufactured" 258 and I was disturbed by several things - timing chain was stretched too far, bearings were hardly worn but the clearances were out of spec, the oil pump was barely in spec but not close to ideal, some other little things bothered me as well. The problem here is while that reman was done several years ago, there haven't been many miles on it, most likely less than 10k. I had the engine out because one of the cheap lifters in there had failed.
There seem to be higher quality reman motors available, but they are not cheap. Jasper, Hesco, and Golen are the ones I noticed. There are many 1700$ types out there, and maybe they are okay, but I couldn't go that route again although I would of if my purpose was to get a new clean engine install and then sell the jeep soon. If you are doing the R&R work, I'd consider talking to a few machine shops in your area to see what they have to tell you. If you are having the engine pulled, maybe consider a Jasper installer so you can take advantage of the relationship between Jasper and the shop. YMMV- please note that I don't have any experience with the builders mentioned, I only mention them after I did some extensive research on the subject of the past few weeks. I went with option c) none of the above and am installing a 2002 TJ motor and trans along with the 2002 engine management systems. We'll see if I ever get that done. |

I paid 800 to have the bottom end completely rebuilt with quality parts and another 400 for a Clearwater 4.0 conversion cylinderhead.
