258 oil capacity?

I changed the oil after I put my head gasket in last week and the haynes repair manual says the capacity for the 258 is 6 quarts. I put about 4 1/2 quarts in and the dipstick shows full. I figured after a week of running the motor I would have to add more but it is still at full. Whats the deal?

No. I ran the engine for a few minutes with the old oil before I changed it and there was no antifreeze in it whn I drained it.

I fill my 80 CJ-5 with 258 with 6 quarts. The indication on the dipstick is about 1/4" above the full line. No problems. Been doing this for years.

This is a stupid question, but......did you change the oil filter also? That holds quite a bit of oil. I run the recommended amount of 6 quarts w/filter change.
The previous owner might have lost/replaced the dipstick with the wrong one, maybe.

Later, T.J.

My 6 quarts includes an oil filter change. Not a stupid question. I'm the original owner of the Jeep. I seem to remember that there wa a sort of a gsket under the dipstick flange. It's not there anymore so that may account for some of the reading disparity.

There's a really long thread about this if you search, but I also ran 6 quarts on my 258.

My 258 shows full at about 5.5 quarts, I just pour the rest in and haven't had a problem yet.
