258 6cyl sputtering at IDLE and any gear EXCEPT reverse

rebuilt fuel system - new tank, new sending unit, new lines, new pump, new filter and cleaned venturi tubes..have not rebuilt carb (or done a bypass), and am not 100% in my handiwork that i have alleviated all vaccuum leaks

Had a serious backfire - blew out muffler, neighbors loved the shotgun blast sound..and now it backfires and sputters at low gear..wants to die at RPM but LOVES reverse. Trolling the threads about carb issues but really curious about this reverse thing.

thanks. confidence - all time low.

This is a real long shot: Maybe the carburetor float and/or needle are sticking, but when the Jeep moves backward, the fuel in the bowl moves in a way to prevent the problem.

That makes sense. it is just so odd. i could drive it backwards across the state but only 20 feet down my street.

Ken, I have been reading your rebuild thread every night, i can't be but 1/4 of the way through it and love it. great job.
