2 piece to 1 piece AMC20 axle swap question

Looking to do the 2 piece to 1 piece axle swap in the rear of my '84 CJ7 (M20).
What is the best kit?
Is the swap very difficult? Have heard horror stories about trying to set the axle end play within 4 millionth of an inch, etc. Anyone done this swap or have advice?

Also found an axle kit on ebay (Item # 7936139610) for $169.00. This is about 1/2 retail from superior, etc. Something wrong with this kit?
Thanks

From what I understand, some of the cheaper "one-piece" axles are actually two pieces welded together. In the better kits, the axles are actually machined from one piece of stock--much better. When I was looking for a set, I found a good deal on Superior. I will try to find the supplier for you and post again.
The installation isn't too bad, just follow the instructions; however, pressing the bearings on the new shafts will take a press with long reach. Unless you have a large floor press, you may want to take the axles and parts to a shop once you have it apart.

I installed Moser. You'll need a press for the bearings if you're going to preform the install yourself. I would find a good axle shop in your area. It would be faster and cheaper in the long run. Superior is also a very good brand.

I just installed a set of Superior one-piece axles in my AMC20 about 6 months ago and I have no complaints. They are VERY heavy-duty. I had to take them to a guy I know with a big press to get the bearings pressed on.

Just put Superior on the The 83 CJ7 with 37's Creepy crawlers and I have no complaints. Look what rear is in the Hummers. Not H2's. Heres pics of them installed.

Checked out your pics, looking good. Can even the one pieces handle the 37"s?

Looks like you extended your driveshafts. How much is it lifted, and how much did you lenghten them?

Just installed 1-pc kit in my 78 cj. Ordered the kit from Randy's ring gear & pinion(ph# 1-800-347-1188) $225.00
After pressing the bearings on I compared the old shaft with the new ones and everything measured the same, so when I installed the new one I used the same shims behind the backing plate. I never pulled the diff cover to check end clearance( probably should have) . Everything seems to be working as it should.
Although I was looking through a 4wd catalogue and the their tech tip recomends removing the centering block when installing 1pc axles. Hope this might help.

I installed Superior. No complaints, been two years. I put in a locker at the same time so upgraded to 31 spline. Saw an article in four wheeler a while back that said the Model 20 with one piece axles was comparable in strength to a ford 9". These things have incredibly thick ring gears, very strong.
