1986 CJ7 won't start

1986 CJ7 2.5. Won't start. Replaced battery, nothing, we tried to jump start and just clicks. Replaced solenoid same thing. We towed it behind a truck to push start engine, it turns over and revs but only with clutch out and being pulled. As soon as clutch is pushed in engine dies. Any ideas.

Have you double checked the wiring on the starter relay (correct wires to the correct posts and good tight connections?)? If it only clicks with the key but it will push start... I'd suspect a bad starter or bad cable/connection (or maybe you bought a defective battery).

Not sure I follow you about the clutch issue. I'm assuming you are doing this after push starting... so when you engage the clutch and the engine dies, is this this happening while driving or while sitting still in neutral, or both?)?

Try a jumper cable from battery ground to the starter.

What I meant was that the jeep is being towed I pop the clutch the engine engages and I can rev the engine but as soon and I depress the clutch it dies. It ran good last year but sat for the last 10 months.

Pressing the clutch pedal should not be able to kill the engine... Are you revving the engine while still being pulled? What does it do if you shift to neutral without using the clutch? Are there any ignition wires getting pinched/jiggled by the clutch pedal movement?
