1986 CJ7 6 cyl 4.2 auto.

Does any one have the spec on this model, thinking about buying one. It needs some work.

Also what trans does it have in it. Someone told me it was a Dodge trans. and will a Mopar engine bolt up.

thanks

Is it original? Sometimes what they start out as isn't what ends up in them.

I have an '85 with similar specs. Assuming it's factory, the tranny is a TF999 (Torque Flight) 3-speed auto and yes it is used extensively in MOPARs and will bolt up to some of the motors w/ minimal or no modifications. If you're lucky, the rear diff could be a Dana 44 (square-looking pumpkin) insead of the AMC 20's (round-looking pumpkin) used in previous years. They put them in the last half of that model year. The ratio was 3.31, I believe. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If you have the AMC 20, the stock gear ratio is 2.73. Your front diff will be a Dana 30 and the transfer case is a Dana 300.
Hope this helps

TF-999 3-speed auto...internals are identical to it's Mopar brethren, but that's it...it does *not* bolt up to a Mopar engine, but you can use the aftermarket shifters, pans, shift kits, etc. You can put in a Mopar V8 and matching auto and swap the Jeep output shaft & tailhousing into/onto the Mopar 9xx trans so that the Dana 300 t-case will bolt back up...doing this on my Scrambler project.

Standard ratio is 2.73, 3.31 if it has the towing package.

Dana 30 front, AMC 20 rear with the possibility (somewhat rare) of a Dana 44 rear instead since it's an '86...easy to tell by looking at the diff cover. If it is basically just a plain round dome, it's the AMC 20.
