1985 CJ 7....Renegade or Laredo???

I just purchased a very clean 85 CJ7, it has been garage kept it's entire life and is in very good original condition. The Jeep recieved a new coat of paint in 96 and the decals were removed and never replaced. I want to put new decals, only problem, I'm not sure if this Jeep was a Renegade or a Laredo how can I tell???

Anyone know???

Thanks,
SD

It can be difficult to tell if it has been repainted. The differences were in the options such as tach, clock, decals etc... These options could have been added at the dealer anyway, so still not easy to tell the differences.
Since you live in Texas, just call it a Laredo

My 86 Laredo has a clock, tach, leather steering wheel and panic bar along with the stainless bumper and chrome grill, bumperettes, chrome rims and rocker guards.

Laredo

besides what is mentioned above...

dash pinstriping used to be hardest to "add on" to make a CJ a Laredo.
Now that is repopped also.

Seats.

Glovebox emblem

horn button

Hardtop tinted windows.

I was told by the seller that this was a " Spring Edition" the seats are black vinyl with orange piping other than that I cannot see anything different than most CJ 7's I've seen. From what I'm hearing today my guess is it's a Renegade. Has anyone ever heard of a "Spring Edition"???

Thanks,
SD

easiest way to tell is leather on the passenger grab (oh S$#t) bar. If it is original, and it's leather wrapped, you have laredo. If it's plain black painted steel, it's a renegade. Laredo also has leather wrapped spokes on steering wheel, renegade just has aluminum spokes. Laredo has horn button with hex head bolts, renegade has plain horn button... Lots of little things, but if those things are original, you can tell.

IF IF IF the seats are original and have the red piping as you describe, then yes, you have an 85 "Spring Special" , not a Laredo.

If you want to be exact to the original, I would go back to Spring Special. If not, there are certain things a Laredo has that the Renegade did not, but it needs to be original to tell.

The Spring Special had the black CJ embossed seats with orange piping and...

CJ embossed black door panels.

since you have a 258 I6 and not a 4 cycl, sounds like someone may have swapped seats at some point

If it isn't clear yet, perhaps the ONLY way to know for sure what a vehicle was from the factory is to know for certain to begin with.

EVERY part that was part of ANY of the packages (Laredo, Renegade, etc) could be ordered from the factory, dealership, and or aftermarket. couple that with the fact that just about every CJ owner in the history of the world has swapped at least one part out for something else, and ...well, the only way to know for sure is to know from the beginning.

I had an '83 CJ7 that I know for a fact wasn't either of the above, but did have a couple of the 'package only' parts many mention.

HTH (and for heavens sake, post up a couple pics)

I really believe that these are the original seats, I bought this from the Ferrari dealer here in Houston. He has had the Jeep stored in a garage since 1996 it only has 55k original miles.
