1984 CJ Steering Column Help

Hey I am new to this page, I have a 1984 CJ5.
Runs great, the only issue is, I lost the keys not too long away and since then had been jimmy rigging it. Well one day it wouldn't start and I haven't been able to get it to start then. I tried taking out the whole column but couldn't get it to work, anyone have an idea what it may be? I am thinking either the ignition cylinder or the whole column... any help would be appreciated!

Pull the igntion switch off the bottom of the column and plug it back up, take a small screwdriver and move the slide with the screwdriver all the way forward, it should start if it doesn't then you have either a bad ignition switch or it is something in the wiring, either way unrelated to the column or the key and tumbler. If it does start then it is in the column or key and tumbler, my guess would be the rack and sector gear which you can read about in the thread posted.

BE AWARE that when you move that slide it may start if everything is working SO MAKE SURE IT IS IN NEUTRAL!!!

Replace the ignition switch, it is quite easy and takes about 30 minutes if you dismantle the column. The only special tool you need is the steering wheel puller but you can make one out of two bolts, 4 nuts and a thickish piece of steel with two holes in. The lock is less than $20.

Don't forget about the lock plate tool.

Bagus, not to step on your toes but the ignition switch is the electrical portion down on the outside of the column, the key portion in the column is called the key and tumbler assembly and the gear in behind it and the one the rod attaches to is the rack and sector. I figure you know this and just mistyped, I didn't want the OP to get confused.

Ooops, you are absolutely right, I meant the ignition LOCK which as you state is the key and tumbler.

I just replaced another one as I lost the key, and don't ask me who lost the SPARE which was locked in the safe....................
