1982 CJ Ignition

I have a problem with my 1982 key ignition. I have broken the pot-metal piece that connects the the ignition switch to the linkage rod that accuates the rod running down the steering column. The problem is I cant tell how I would replace the part.

I have taken off the cowl at the dash and busted off the plastic piece that contains the "key releaser". However the steering whell doesnt want to seem to come off and I'm not sure it needs to.

Can anyone offer insight into how to go about removing the necessary parts in order to repair this part? Or can anyone offer a temporary work around?

I can mannually pull the linkage rod to get proper key swithc position but I can figure out how to get the starter to engage.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

For a quick fix, you could take the two wires out of the column connector and wire in a push button to pull in the solenoid. Shouldn't be to much trouble and fetches back on the road til you can resolve the broken piece issue. Good luck.

Ugh, I don't have a good schematic but I'm sure someone on the forum does. If worse comes to worse you can trace them back from the starter solenoid. I saw a jeep factory service manual online somewhere with a whole slew of schematics. Try a google search maybe.

I guess you're right. I just need to wire a switch/button to jump the solenoid over. I would just accuate the key switch then hit the toggle/button. Ok, fair enough. I will try that once I get a chance over the next couple of days. I'll look for a more permenant fix when I tire of the work-around.
Thanks for your help.

You can also buy a remote starter from your local auto parts store for about $10.

Here's one at Summit for $11.95
