1981 CJ-7 engine swap 258 to 304

I want to swap out a 258 and put in a 304. can anyone tell me if its hard to do??? Can I use anything from the 258 like the altinator or Air conditioner?? Will the 304 bolt in with no problems?? Do i have to get a new trans?? Im guessing I have to get new motor mounts. If anyone has done this please help me out

belhousing , clutch, flywheel, starter, altenator, radiator, are all the same... simply bolts up... you will need all the brakets for the 304 since the one's for the 258 won't work (altenator braket etc.. )

i was doing the 304 to 258 swap.. ti'll i ran into a running cj-7 with the 258 in it... swaping from the 258 and going to a 304 isn't really hard it's more like expensive if you don't have a running donor vehicle... all parts are available online ( for a price ) i found i was cheaper to buy a donor than to buy what i needed online

i would forget about AMC and go with a Chevy drive train ( from a donor vehicle) ... it's cheaper in the short and long run, plus chevy parts are everywhere... that's my 2 cents

Thanks for the reply. I went to test drive a 1981 cj 7 and when the guy went to start it it made a poping sound. We think one of the cylinders is bad. We did a compression test and didnt get anything but a very low reading. He has a used 304 with low miles on it. Thats nice i can use the stuff from the 258. Can the 304 use the same t-176 transmission??

I'm thinking of doing the same thing(going from 258 to a 304) can i use the same motor mounts or do i need a different set?

You can use the same motor maounts, you just might have to flip one upside down (dont remember which side). The T-176 will hold up fine behind the 304, mine hasn't given me problems and my 304 is somewhat built. Very easy swap if you have access to a cherry picker, with that and basic hand tools I did mine in 1 day in my driveway with just 1 other person.
