im having problems locating what i think is a vacuum leak, my jeep has sat for about a month which i know most likely is the problem it ran fine before. i can get her runnin perfect at idle but when i go to drive it spits and sputters kind of almost missin. i've checked every vacuum line possible and ive adjusted the idle and air mixture a couple different times to check if that was the problem but idk im stumped. i also cleaned the jets out in the carb, checked the fuel pump, checked the filters, its getting plenty of fuel, and its gettin spark...what really stumped me was i took the air adjustment screw all the way out and the engine didnt change in anyway, i covered the hole for it and again it stayed the same!!, how can that be??? i also tried the starter fluid trick spraying it around the motor listening for any indication of the idle changing which would indicate theres the leak and no luck!!,,.....any help would be appreciated !!!!!!!!! thanks
I don't think it is a vacuum leak if it will idle, it's usually the other way around. Check your cap and rotor for wear, bad spark plug wires, timing... It maybe fuel related too, floats not set correctly or stuck, I know you said you cleaned the jets but matbe you missed something. How old is the gas?
the gas is good i put 4 1/2 gallons in it yesterday and was messing with it, also i checked the cap and rotor it looks good i even adjusted the timing a little bit and it got worse so i put it back. spark plugs are a month old and the wires too...the float seemed fine as well, im at a loss!
When you sprayed starting fluid, did you get all the way around the carb while it's running? It just doesn't sound like a vacuum leak, most of the time with a leak you need lots of throttle to keeo it running because it's sucking air. Does it have points? If it ran good before, check what you have changed, is it backfiring or does it seem like it's running out of gas?
yes that was the main place i sprayed, and it does need lots of throttle to keep running while driving but at idle itll be fine and i havent changed nuthing to it. it does backfire a little bit when trying to drive it and it does act like its out of gas thats the main reason i put 4 gallons in it yesterday bc initially i thought i ran it out and figured that was the problem but it most def wasnt haha
If you're certain you've ruled out a vacuum leak, the next place to look is the idle/low-speed passages in the carb. They may be plugged up enough to allow enough fuel to flow at an idle (although I'm sure your throttle plates are well beyond the right idle position) but go nearly dead-lean when you try to throttle up.
Does it run pretty well when you mat the throttle?
its a 2 barrel motorcraft i think its the 2100 but not sure, its got the accelerator pump on the front...and yes itll run good when i matt it at idle but when im drivin not so much
I'm not familiar with that carb but there are MANY on here who are. Perhaps they can tell you how to blow out the idle air bleeds with carb cleaner, or maybe it takes a full-body chem soak. For risk of sounding like a moron, I'll stop there but that's a direction I'd pursue. Aside from the obvious vacuum leak, it sounds like your idle passages might be plugged.
ok man i do appreciate it bc im up to the point of sounding like a moron myself as well hahaha bc all i know to do now is to do a rebuild on the carb which im picking up today and hopefully thats it but i just wanted to ask some one with more knowledge bout these jeeps incase i was missing something obvious or something so simple
