1979 CJ5 2.5" or 4" BDS Lift?

I have a 1979 CJ5 with sagging stock springs. I need new springs and I have decided I would go ahead and do a BDS lift. My question is: Should I go with the 2.5" or 4" Lift? I know i will spend a little more money with some extra parts for the 4". That is not an issue. I currenly have 31x10.50 Tires on 15x8 wheels. I also have stock AMC20 front and rear differentials. will the 4" make me too top heavy? I hope to go with 15X10 Wheels and 33x12.50 tires once my 31's wear out. Any input is appreciated.

If you plan to run 33's I would go 4''.

Why I went with a 2-1/2" Lift

I went with 2-1/2 on my CJ5 because I still drive mine a lot on the roads. Probably about 90% of the time. And still need to plow in winter.

I have a total of 2-1/2 Spring lift, 1/2" Shackle lift and 1" body lift. I am at the limit of a u-joint angle right now and didn't have any funds left for a CV drive shaft setup that I would need if I went with a full 4" spring lift.

With the narrow track axles, I don't get any fender rubbing in or on the wheel well. If I get the wide track axles on, I may have to change some things.

Kinda adds up to 4" without the tippyness of 4" on just the spring lift.

I'm also running 15X10: rims with 33X12.5 tires.

You dont have any idea how many times i have been back and forth on this......i can't seem to make up my mind..... i would love to see a 4" lift w/ 33 set up in person...... but cj5's with that around here are almost non existent..... i just dont want too high of a lift for the safety reasons.....

I am thinking the same thing. I don't want to make a death trap out of my jeep by making it top heavy but I don't want to regret not getting the 4 inch lift later on. I could always get some taller shackles with the 2.5 but I would rather have my lift in the springs than shackles.

Here's a pic of my '80 with a 4" BDS lift. The lift only has about 100 miles on it so far so it will probably settle a bit more.
Some more details:
-no body lift
-shackles are 3/8 longer than stock so 3/16" shackle lift
-wheels are Eagle Alloy 15 x 10
-tires are Kumho 33-12.50-15 MTR's
-BDS shocks from the kit
-DC rear driveshaft from an XJ

i did a 2.5 on my cj7 and run 33 inch tires. bottom line is this, bigger than a 2.5 and it wont fit in a normal garage with a hard top and ski racks all she wrote

I went with a 2.5" and couldn't be happier! That being said, I don't drive it a ton, but when I do, it goes down the road awesome. BDS was a great choice in my book. Not that I've ever tried any other brand! I noticed a HUGE difference over the stock though. If you want to go higher than a 2.5" down the road, couldn't you do a soa to gain the difference or am I talking about something that I have no idea about

I have the same setup as FullTank except with 15x8 rims.





Sorry these aren't the best pics but it was a fun day.

The 4" BDS springs ride great compared to stock, but I need to warn you that their 4" springs are much closer to 5". Upside is the flex is better than most 4" springs but if you are going to do much rock crawling you will soon be looking for better flex and softer yet ride.

I have absolutely no issues with either body roll or feeling tipsy. Mind you I did add 2" wheel spacers to approximate wide track axles.

Just my 2 cents.

SOA with STOCK springs will yield you about 5.5-6" of lift automatically. so usually you go 2.5" SUA, 4", SUA, then stock SOA, 2" SOA, 4" SOA
