I guessing your spare tire isn't on the tailgate.

OP, it will fit any CJ, YJ till 1995. However, on the YJ,, with the spare tire in the stock location, on the tailgate. It would be difficult at best to open, if not impossible to open the liftgate. Unless a change is made to the bottom of the CJ liftgate, it requires cutting and riviting/bolting/ welding.

on edit, I should have added 1976 and up cj

1957 WILLYS pickup,
1973 J 4000,
1978 CJ7 DD.
1979 CJ7 360, TH400/Quadratrac.
1979 J20
1980 CJ5 trail Jeep.
1983 CJ7
1989 YJ the CJ to YJ.

Will fit (and work right) with 1976 to 1986 CJ-7s. It is most correct on the 76 to 80 as those are the years with the thicker tops and no dome light
1975 CJ-6 1983 CJ-8
1986 CJ-7 Laredo 1986 TJ-7 Trail Jeep
