1978 CJ7, what should I look for?

Considering a CJ7 "Golden Eagle" What should I look for?

It has the 6 cyl, 3 speed plus low. Looks like the manual shift transfer case, 4h 4l 2h. Old, but usable tires with much tread. Soft top is very weathered and brittle. Steering column wobbles a lot (like a bearing is out just below wheel) , and the wheel has been replaced, horn button wired on dash. Odometer showing 30,000. Tub is rusty on floor boards, but not through. Someone has put a different air cleaner on. . . And the power steering pump and bracket dont look orig. Owner says it "runs good" and gets down the hiway.

He wants $3500.00

I'd say more like 22 at the max. . .

If you don't like the way it drives; I say keep moving. There are lots of cj's out there for 3500
that don't have the problems you're mentioning. You just have to be patient and have cash in hand

pictures are the only way to tell, look at the body mounts under the rubber part, they are almost always rusted through. Steering column is not super difficult to fix, you should do the lock cylinder and ignition switch while its apart, they are cheap. my lock cylinder was around 20 and the ignition switch was about 10. Look inside the frame rails, look for cracks around the shackles and brackets.
