1978 CJ7 Transmission and Transfer Case
 
1978 CJ7 304 V-8 3 speed manual


My understanding is that there can be a number of different trannies, differential and front/rear axels on this particular model.

What are the most common:

Transmission
Differential
From Axel
Rear Axel


Are these normally positive/limited slip or open front and rear end differential?


Who normally works on fixing or rebuilding a transfer case - a transmission guys or an axel/differential guy?

Transmission is a tremec T-150, transfer case in 78 was the dana/spicer 20. The stock rear axle was the AMC model 20, it's differential housing it spherical in shape. And I'm not sure about the front axle in 78, I think mine's a Dana 35 but don't quote me on that.

Its a Dana 30 front axle. From my knowledge, the Dana 35 is a rear axle and used in YJs and TJs. And maybe JKs, not sure about those.

T-150 trans/dana 20 xfer case/AMC 20 rear/and a 30 up front.
INHO....DO NOT sell the AMC 20 short. Unless you can get 300hp from the 304, you can make it live nicely. Get 1 pc axles, weld the tubes to the pumpkin and maybe add a truss if you're a rock crawler or like gettin' air. I just lucked into a D44, but wouldn't have shelled out big bucks for 1.

Odds are it's either 3.54 or 3.73 (rare). About a 2% chance of the cheesey "Trac-Lok" posi-ish unit. The rears should have a tag. Or on the top right side of the rear axle, it may have some numbers for you to decipher. Use water, wire brush and cloth to expose these. Don't go nuts w/the wire!

Transfer case indicator light wiring location
 
I have a 78 cj7 three speed. The light on the dash that indicates that you are in 4 wheel drive comes on when I shift into 3rd gear. I obviously have the wire connected to the wrong spot on the transmission/transfer case. From the drivers position I have it connected on top of the transmission on the left.
I see two more possible locations for the switch on the transfer case.
I would like to see some pictures of the correct location of the sending switch.
Also any other info would be greatly appreciated.
