1976 cj7 allergic to water

I am running a 304 amc with stock ignition. Whenever the jeep so much as smells water (driving through mud puddle) it sputters and sometimes dies and leaves you stranded for a half hour or so. We moved the gold box up on the top of the fender and siliconed the harness to keep it away from moisture, but now it misses terribly and the water situation is still just as bad. Any suggestions?

Jeepfarmer, had a problem like yours before. Could be carbon tracing on the inside of the distributor cap. High humidity will do it too. The fix might be as simple as a new distributor cap, as yours may have invisible hairline cracks. Its cheap and worth the try anyway.
