1976 CJ5 complete tear down and rebuild

Guys i'm starting my teardown today. Here are some before pics of my killer jeep. Starting tonight on taking things apart. I already have my "new" engine mounted on the stand so my teardown will start with that.

Now if it would stop snowing so I can spend more time in the garage and less time blowing snow I might get ahead.

Started tearing my 84 CJ7 doner engine apart today. Its going good just slow due to some stuck bolts. time to coatwith PB blaster and let it sit for a big.

Looks like you have a pretty good base to start from, and I wish I had a hard top for mine! Make sure you take tons of pictures

Defiently going to take tons of pics. Not planning on keeping the hard top actually. It's going from my daily driver to my play toy so I'm planning on putting a roll cage in it that will act as both the roll cage and soft top support.

dug into the engine thisafternoon. I had no idea how much more complicated the intake manifold is on an 84 engine compared to a 76 engine. They sure did pack a lot of emissions stuff on there. Good thing all that crap won't be going back on . Also noticed as on most 258's that the rear of the manifold has a nice coat of oil on the bolts while the front part is completely dry. Guess they didn't fix that with all the emissions stuff.

heres some pics, Now one quick question. There is a number plate on the distributer side that I'm not sure what it means. I know the engine numbers on the manifold side tell the engine info and the oversized parts but could someone translate it for me.

haven't gotten to work on tearing the engine apart since this weekend but i lined up a set of wide axels to swap my narrows out with, disk breaks up front. waahooo

got time to dig into the engine today. I was a little surprised to find pine needles inside the head.

The pistons were pretty coated carbon andpretty dirty.

The big surprise on the pistons was the #4 piston which looks like it has brid crap on it. Not sure what it is.

Once i get my harmonic ballancer puller i'll get the timing cover off and then flip her over and get the rest out.

I have hand surgery on tuesday so its going to be a couple weeks before i can get much else done. Already had the right hand done last month.

Started this awhile ago and haven't kept up with mine as much as I've read on others.

Where I am now.

Body has finally been pulled off the frame. (just finished doing this today)

I've actually done a lot of teardown and not rebuilding yet. here's a couple pics of where I am.

The block on the red stand is my newish I6 since the original blew a seam back in January when I was coming home from work. No fun with its -5 and the cab fills with steam. luckily there was a parking lot near by I could park in and leave it there to the next day.

So I was taking the rear drive shaft off and saw the bushing was all shot.

Can that "cap" be replaces?

Should be able to replace it. Depends on the brand of the shaft. Look for slip-yoke dust caps.

Subscribed. Wondering is you might have some photos of the engine compartment before you disassembled it? I have a '76 232 we're restoring and I'm trying to determine what it was originally equipped with in terms of carb, air cleaner housing, and general underhood hose routiong, etc. Mine was a complete basket case when we got it 11 years ago. Has come a long way.

OK so I did a little more tear down today. Was going to get the transmission and all off but the kids were't allowing me the time I needed.

Anyway I got the bell housing off and found some not so happy items.

1) Front of Transmission
2) nasty groves and rust
3) funky oil coming out of transmission
4) My jeep is a 76CJ5 with T150 but this data stamp makes me think the transmission was replaced with one made in 83? is this so?

Uhmmm...

This part in the center of the bellhousing:


is suppose to stay on the front of the tranny....




Any reason you left it in the bell housing?
Was it stuck?



Oil looks normal by the way. Should be heavy gear lube.


Not sure if they made them in 83, in jeeps, they only came out till 1979. Not sure of other uses though.
