1974 CJ8 scrambler--tell me what you know

just looking for general info on it. my buddy in looking at trading his 95 YJ for one.

i know it has the 4.2 6 popper in it, backed by a 4 speed. what tranny? what T-case? what axles and gears does it most likely have?

it is sitting on some Q78-15 buckshots, how much lift would it need to clear them? It looks like maybe 4" lift or so, but i am not familiar with teh CJ's. just looking for anything he should watch out for before buying it.

I'm assuming you meant 1984. Trans would be a T-176 (decent) or T-4 (not so durable)...you can find ID info at www.jeeptech.com in the transmission section. Dana 300 t-case is it for 80-86, axles are Dana 30 front, AMC 20 rear...use the axle info at the same site to decode what your gear ratio should be (assuming they weren't changed to go with the larger tires). Typical gearing is 2.73 with 3.31's as an option w/the towing package. 4" lift would be about right for clearing those tires.

2.73's are enough to make that poor 258 bog with big tires.

Well Scramblers were only made from 1981-1986, so...

lol. i noticed that. must be an 84 then.

and after reading up, it might be teh 232 not the 258. the owner knows as much about it as i do, which is not much.

it has a hard time taking off. if he gets it, regear is definitely in order for it.

All Scrambles left the factory with either the 258 motor or the 4 cylinder motor.

Nope. '80 or '81 was the last year the 304 V8 was offered, Scramblers didn't get them.

No, it would not be a 232.

What size tires did it have? I have the 258 I6 with 3.31 gears and 31" tires and it's no hot rod, but it's manageable. I had 33" BFG ATs on it at one time with the same gears and that was pushing it as far as driveability goes, especially when I was trying to haul my boat.

I don't think anyone has ever confirmed an 86.

That's my "add something useless to the thread" post.

Make sure it is a scrambler and not a CJ-6. It sounds like you need a lot more info.
