Dj 1971 DJ-5B Build 'Butt Ugly'

Got this a couple months back from a friend of a friend. Don't know much about it, but here's the rundown:

The Good:
No frame/floorpan rust
Complete sans transmission crossmember
It was free

The Bad:
Early bell 232
Bad transmission
Rust around window corners

The Ugly:
PO put carpet in it with self-tapping screws
It's really butt ugly

Where she sat.

Bringing her home.

Where she sits.

I'm running through ideas, but the plan currently goes as follows:

302 / 4.0 with a NP465 mated to a Dana 300, Dana 25/27/30 front swap, new tires and shocks, rust repair.

Until I source all of this fun stuff I'll be toying with the stock drivetrain and selling it off.

Do you like picture books? I do, here are some more pictures:

I'll update y'all with progress when it gets here.

That would be a great expobuild. I have always liked the DJ's, and would have loved to build one.

Looking at getting a 240D/300D motor mated up to a geo tracker or samurai drivetrain, whatever I can get a hold of. I could get a whole vehicle for the running price of a SM465.

Went to the junkyard on 'wheelbarrow wednesday' and pulled a complete 4.0 / AW4 out of a 1998 Cherokee for $100.

Got a water pump and intake gasket on order. Looking for solutions for the trans crossmember and driveshaft. I've got the old intake notched and ready to install. Oil pans were drilled (lazy bums) so I need to get them welded up. Plan to use the old harmonic balancer and v belt. Not sure where to mount the alternator. Dizzy fit right in, HEI is a possibility but it is just a 1bbl and a budget build. Really liked how the front came off in ~10ish bolts.
