1961 CJ5 Speedometer
I bought a 61 CJ5 from someone and noticed the speedometer shows a slower speed than you are actually going. So I guess I need to change the spedo gear in the transfer case. I went on the internet and found a program that all you have to do is type in your numbers for axle ratio and tire size and the number of how many rotation the spedo needs to turn to equal 1 mile. It says that on 1964 and newer vehicle there will be a number like 940 or 960 or 1000 that tells you the number of revolutions. My jeep is older than 64 and the only marking on the back is B6. Does anyone know how many revolutions it takes to reach a mile. I realize I could spin the input to the speedometer by hand until I get to a mile on the odometer but I was hoping someone would be able to help me from having to do that.

Maybe someone more familiar with older CJ's can answer your question but I believe you can figure this out just like any other speedo correction issue. You need to know your actual speed as compared to the registered speed and you need to know the current number of teeth on your speedo drive gear. You said it reads slower than actual speed so we know you will need a smaller gear to spin faster and speed up the speedometer.
For instance, registered speed of 55 with an actual speed of 60 with a current speedo gear of 33 teeth. 55/60=.91666 if your current gear is a 33, take 33x.916666=30.249 so a 30 tooth gear would be the closest. Make sense?
