1947 willys engine swaps
I have a 1947 willys with the flat 4 cylinder in mated to the t90 trans and spicer 18 transfer case. I am rebuilding it into an offroading rig. Im planning on running 35's when its all said and done. Im looking to swap the engine but wanted to get some input on some good swaps that arent extremely difficult. Ive seen people use the buick 231 but havent seen to many others. Any insight would be helpful. I want it to stay a manual so transmission suggestions would also help too. Im thinking about using the stock t-case but am not entirely sure if it would work good with the bigger tires. Thanks for the input.

the 231 is a good swap, its what I anticipated putting in my '46 if I can ever find a bellhousing (though I havnt looked that hard) and you can still use the D18 t-case.
a FI 4.3 V-6 from a chevy is another good swap, would be nice in an offroad rig, mate it to a SM465 or something. I have even seen later model 3800 V-6 swaps, (the 3800 is based on the 231) where are you located? Check out www.earlycj5.com for some info, they are more oriented toward the ECj5 but they do have flatfender tech and are very helpful.

I know that it is not very popular, but I put a '87 Ford 3.8 V6 in my '43 GPW and love it. It bolts up to a SB Ford bellhousing so I used a T18 and a 18 tcase with a Saturn OD.
These engines are small, light and bottom heavy with stock aluminum heads. To me a low CG is very important. It has gobs of torque and will rev up well. Good luck ![]()
