151 4cyl swap for 258 6cyl

I just bought the 258 6cyl and am going to swap out my 151 4cyl. What I need to know is what modifications or adaptors am I going to need to make this swap work? The tranny is still attached it is the T-5 and mine is the SR-4. Also I have the Dana 300 transfer case if this helps any. Thanks for any advice.

The bellhousing attached to the 258 will work for both transmissions (SR4 & T5) so you can use whichever tranny you prefer.

You will need engine frame brackets for a 258 6 cyl. which shouldn't be hard to find.

You may need some driveshaft mods.

You should install a new clutch kit specific to the 258.

You should probably have the 258 flywheel machined.

You will probably need a new radiator.

Not sure if you have a hydro clutch with the 151 or not. If you do there might be some minor slave cylinder mods required.

Hopefully others will chime in as well.

151 engine

Sorry, I know this isn't what you asked but I have an '83 with the 151 engine also. Can you tell me how large the gas tank is on the jeep with the 151 engine please?

I am doing the same thing and am about halfway through it, let me know what problems you run into and maybe i can help. I have had problems finding the frame brackets and mounts that match. I would also recommend going with either the HEI or TFI.

+2...rebuilding the T177 and D300 before the 258 goes in.

I was told to go with the motorcraft 2100 carb, is this a good choice? Also I would like to put headers on it, is this a good idea?

I just bought a rebuild kit for my carb. My uncle is helping me and he has been a mechanic since before mud was invented so i have been going with most his advice. What did you find out on the motor mounts and frame mounts?

I found the frame brackets at a junk yard but I had to order the bushing mounts through morris4x4.com. They were 89.95 for the pair. I am pretty much at a stand still until they get here. While I am waiting I am trying to find out if my dana300 tranfer case needs rebuilt cause it wouldn't work in 4x4 hi. Also while I had the fenders, grill, and tires off I found that my brakes are shot. So add that to the list.... How is your swap going?

My swap is still going. I ended up making my own mounts because I couldn't find any locally. I had to get a new radiator because the ports for the 151 were opposite than the 258. I also don't know what I am going to do about the fan. I had to remove it because it wasn't going to fit at all. I am planning on doing some electric fans, but they will have to be pushers and I am not real excited about that. As it sits right now I do not have much clearance between the engine and the radiator...about 1.25 inches. For now though it just sits in my garage begging to be finished.

So anybody in the Farmington Area that wants to work on a saturday or sunday just let me know.

Lineman -check the input spline count on the SR4 before you make a decision. I don't know about the 151, but the 150 used a different spline count than the 258.

Jeepsta - the 5 came with a 258 stock IIRC, so you may just have a wrong radiator. Have any pics of it mounted? There are several radiators out there just have different mounting tabs that place the rad in or out from the grill.

I was going to install my slave cylinder and it looks like it won't fit right. I do have the hydralic one. I looked at slave cylinders in parts houses and they all look like the one I have. Anybody out there with any ideas.
