10k??

Hey, Im looking for cj's bc I have a TJ but its too nice and I'd rather not dint it up or anything(im 16..) My dads friend owns a shop and has a cj he bought with no motor and they are gonna put a 304 in it. It has a springover, 60r, 44f, welded, good body, interior nice. My problem is mechanically how is a cj's transmission, id dont think i will have the money to put it in the shop for that kind of stuff. Is it worth the money or stay with my TJ?? Thanks.

They put a lot of different tranny's in CJ's The best manual (imo)is the T18 4 spd, but they had a T150 3spd that came with the 304, and those seem to hold up well too. Later you had the T176 4 spd (decent, but shifter setup sucks), T5, T4, and SR4, which were all marginal tranny's at best with a 6 cyl, and are risky with a V8, although people have done it. You should be able to get a decent used tranny for $2-300. Good thing about CJ's is any shadetree machanic can work on them, and they would be good to learn on. TJ's are too modern for your average billy bob to work on. The axles you mentioned are really heavy, and if the rest is in good shape it might be a good one to own, but I can't see somebody asking 10K for a jeep that isn't street ready (although it's really easy to put that much in one). If you are gonna put that kinda money in a CJ you would be better off finding a stocker for 3-4K and using the other 6-7K to mod it exactly like you want it (again IMO)

Thanks, its a 4 speed but they arent' sure what year it is. The guys who own it have a real good business and know what they are doing. This is the only reason why my dad is considering getting an old jeep. It also has 38in boggers!!

If it is a stock jeep tranny the curved sticks are bad (t4 and sr4) and the straight shifter is a T176. Not sure what the shifter looks like on the t18.... Ask the guys what tranny it has (or if they don't know, what year jeep/(other vehicle if it's not stock)it is)then post here and somebody will know if it's any good.
