I have a 1978 cj5 and need to replace the rear brake shoes. 1978 was a year when there was both 10 and 11" drums. Is there a way to tell without removing the wheel?
If you have the two bolt calipers on front, it will have 10" drums in back.
Six bolt calipers, have 11" drums.
At least the 1978 axles I have seen were like that.
With any Jeep, nothing is ever set in set in stone. Best to measure to be sure.
Or you can even measure it, but it should be stamped on the drum. I had to replace a 11" on my 74 and O'Reilly's had it in stock at another store--took two hours to get it to my local store. It is a common brake drum used by Ford on their older 4WDs.
I found an 11" plus hardware at an Advance store nearby so I'm good for this weekend!
Thanks to all for your help.
