To you XJ guys-
So i was driving the Wrangler home today, and got to thinking that I might not want to drive this thing the distance I have to everyday. Lets put it this way: practicality. Im thinking an XJ would fit me better: still a Jeep, more room, more DD friendly. I am thinking probly a 99 model Sport, either color just not black or white. What should I be keeping my eye open for and what price range? I know the XJ's go cheaper than Wranglers-IE-we gave 14 grand for our 99 TJ. Thanks!

Got my 99 sport for $7500 w/ 99k on the clock. Pricey, buy the people before me kept it well maintained (old folks), and it wasnt modded in any way. I could have gotten one cheaper, but it was local, and we know the owner of the dealer.
Mine is Gun Metal Blue/ Steel blue, whatever you want to call it. But yeah id get a 99 if i were you. Rides great even with the lift.![]() ![]() |

got mine for 5 off the lot with a warranty. It's a 98, which is right smack dab in the middle of the good year mark (97-99). If you want practicality, I will say you need not buy a Jeep. Even though it's stock, it still wont get the mileage you're looking for.
Which is why I'm buying another MOPAR. Sure, the 1972 Challenger was never good on gas, but it rides a **** ton better.

Yes, gas mileage is not that big of a deal. We have suv's and deisel trucks, so 15-20 mpg is not so bad. I had also heard, and seen in our previous grand cherokee that they have bad electrical problems. Sometimes, going down the road, the AC would turn on wide open for no reason, a little tap and it would go back off. I have also heard a few other stories of this. Is this just Chrysler-hater's BS or what?

grands are a whole different animal than an xj...I've heard of GC electrical problems but have yet to hear of xj electrical problems. Do it.
Like said, 97-99 are the best years. Look for the chrysler 8.25 rear axle. |

ZJ's and WJ's are naturally more prone to problems caused by a million little electrical gadgets that can go bad and annoy you to all hell, while the XJ's are simple, light, easy to work on, easy and fun to drive, and since gas mileage isnt a concern for you I'd get one! I love my 88, and the general consensus here is that the 96's are the best of the old style, and 99's are the best of the new style. Dont block out the 87-90 Renix xj's which have no OBD to deal with, and troubleshooting is easy as can be, but dont consider anything under 84-86, bad engines, bad transmissions, millions of miles of vacuum lines, just bad news. Good Luck!

Some year XJ's are prone to eating water pumps
The later models have a few common electrical issues. One very common one is the speaker wiring on either the driver or passenger side speakers on the front doors. Those wires tend to get chewed up, so the speakers die pretty easily. Another is the passenger window or all three other windows not working. If this happens in yours, there are about as many threads on it as there are "biggest tire size on stock ride height". Easy to find the solution too. |

We paid $5400 2 years ago for my wife's 99 Cherokee Classic, with 120k miles on the clock.

Paid 5k 2+ years ago for my 98 fully loaded, and I recently hit 190k. Parts are cheap, and the xj is the easiest thing Ive ever worked on.

Wha?
|
In Feb '06 i paid $7200 for a '99 Limited with 85k miles and a 12mo warranty off the lot. I most likely could have paid less from a private party but i was pressed for time and this one had all the specific things i was looking for (tow package, cruise control, ABS, np242, blah blah blah).
It's worked out pretty well for us. Even stock it's been a dream in Tahoe during the winter and now we've got a spawn and it gives us plenty of space for all of his associated gear. I need to replace the rear leafs (they tend to suffer from sag), but other than that at the aforementioned window and speaker bugs the thing has been great.
