may i present you a few more:

the smart for2

also worth mentioning: these and nearly any other car, van or truck offer on the europen marked has at least one diesel option, often 2 or more.
We have that thing over here too, but not the other good looking smart car. But seriously, I don't know I'd feel comfortable driving that thing in southern states consider you are surronded by ford excursion, chevy taho, and F350's driven by crazy soccer moms.

Those things are smaller than a Miata, and only have a 660cc engine. What they lack in size and power, they make up for with incredible light weight and sublime handling. Chrysler showed a concept based off this platform a couple of years ago, the Slingshot, but unfortunately decided not to make it. It's like a modern MG Midget, but without the oil leaks.

I dont care 60-70 MPG for a base price up around $15k. I'd drive a smart car, I dont care much what my other vehicle is as long as I own at least one Jeep.

hmm.........i could either drive my jeep at 12 mpg, which i bought for $800, and of course put maybe $1500 into it (so far) and not lack in the looks, capability, and just the privelage of driving it. or i could go spend $40,000 on some fuel economy car......"to save a buck" at the pump. i think ill be stickin with the jeep.

That is impressive. But the thing is so small it looks like you would need all that for just tapping someone's bumper at a stop sign. I saw a lot of those in Australia, had to look to see if it had floorboards or if you just stick your feet out the bottom ala the Flintsones.
If they priced them really low, like the yugo, they would probably sell a lot here.

I would get one and rent it to 16 year olds for parallel parking on the driving test.

BMW did come out with something below the 3 series. It's the 1 series and it's pretty much like a golf, which is a real car compared to all the smart cars and stuff. It is understandable that cars like that take off over here in europe though since gas prices are high... and by high i mean around $5.30 a gallon depending on where you are. I dorve a golf for a couple of years and loved it. I think the Mercedes' A class was a mistake just like Audi's A2, the beamer is ok just too pricey for a car like that. Another awesome compact car is the Audi A3 or S3.

I wonder if you would have better luck telling a girl you drive a Mercedes and then roll up in a Unimog...?

See, I know you were trying to make a joke, but I hear that all the time. As well as the "American's are obssessed with big things"

Did it ever occur to anyone that Americans are large? I'm 6'-3" 240 ish pounds. And my legs are cramped driving any car! I can't imagine shoving myself into a little cracker jack car. (Not to mention they are ugly).

Now, I don't know how often you see tall people in Europe, but it's pretty common in the US, and I know it's more common than in Asia.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but I wish people would think about those of us in the big & tall section.

I hate to dissapoint you, but you could be wrong... http://www.heightmax.com/how_dutch_grown.htm
The weight issue is ofcourse another story.

I'm the average 6'1, and only have problems with some small Japanese import cars. The Merc-A fits me like a glove. (if only it wasn't such an ugly thing.. )
