XPantispyware 2009

Somehow my computer has become infected with something called XP AntiSpyware 2009. It appears to be a legitimate anti-spyware program but I didn't install it. Any time I try to click a link on Google to find out how to remove it, I get redirected to the company's website, where they try to get me to buy a subscription.

Can anyone offer some guidance on how to remove this? HiJack This isn't starting for me, but I know it would do the trick.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-xp-antispyware-2009 that seems like a pretty comprehensive set of instructions to do it.

Also requires a (free) download, but seems to be one of those freeware things that people fed up with this **** right, but I could be mistaken.

Go to your control panel and Add/Remove Programs. If it's not in there (in some form), download Windows Defender from Microsoft. It's really good at getting spyware/malware. I just use Defender, Sophos Antivirus, and Windows Firewall, and I don't get any viruses or malware.

You can't uninstall it from the add/remove panel. It just downloads more crap. Also, the program prevents me from getting to the MS download page.

Any time that I try to get to a page that will help remove it, I either get a dead link or get redirected to another list of results.

yeah, they're pretty good at trying to stop you from fixing it, and they're too big to normally email

here's a direct link to malwarebytes

if you still can't get it from that PC just download it on to a thumb drive

I'd also recommend SUPERAntispyware which is awesome and free

and this adware HOSTS file - which has ~100k known adware/spyware addresses

My wife got this on her laptop. If you create another user account that account will be able to go to the MS download site and the other places you can't go using the affected account. Then you can fix the issue from the other account. I think I used the page kyoseki posted.

first thing is to try and restore from a restore point.

if that doesn't work, then restart your computer into safe mode with networking then download the files you need. install and run them in safe mode.

if that doesn't work, then you need to download the files from another computer. disconnect the infected computer from your network, install and run the files.
