Xm Radio?
how do you like yours?
i am thinking about getting this, and wanted to hear some feedback on it first. i have a stock jeep radio, and will probably keep it that way [maybe] so no one wants to steal the damn thing. i am wondering: what is a good brand [inexpensive/dependable] will the xm thing hook to my stock radio? can i later hook it to an aftermarket radio? do you get reception in the boonies? see, i'd get a cd playing stereo that sounds nice, but i'm afraid the dust from the trail, and the bumps would kill it. any feedback in this area? i do currently have the stock sound bar, and will likely put some better speakers in there, but i dont expect to have any amped up booming system... i'd just like to have some decent sounds in the boonies, and have it be dependable ![]() thanks for any input!

XM, like all radio, has its good points and bad points. It works everywhere you can see the sky. It has plenty of stations to choose from. It has news, comedy, etc. if you dont want to listen to music. Personally, im not very impressed with the music they play, because they play all songs from a genra on a channel, not just popular ones.
The one ive used is by Pioneer, and is a box that you can put in your dash, with just a 1x3" screen showing. The screen isnt attached to the rest of the unit, so its petty theft proof. It works with any radio, becuase it has an fm modulator. It broadcasts on 87.9 FM, but if there are any local stations interfering, you can change it. The antenna was simple to mount, and should be even easier in a jeep. (this ones in a 99 super duty) My bottom line: if you dont want to put in a cd player, its the way to go, expecially if you live in the middle of noware like i do. ( i get 3 radio stations, 1 top 100, 2 country)

i have the XM roady in my buick DD, i love it. I have it hooked to the stiock stereo, mine i can have swapped to the jeep in under 5 minutes using a wireless FM modulator, but you can use a hard wired FM modulator or a cassette adapter as well as if you have RCA inputs you can use those. I lose reception for a split second when i go under certain bridges in the area and under the carports at gas stations sometimes. But this may be due to the antenna is supposed to be on a minimum of a 1 square foot patch of steel and i have it on my dashboard. It doesn't bother me though, i ALWAYS have something to listen to, if music isn't suiting me i switch to XM150 comedy and its all stand ups, and most are friggin hilarious.
the roady can be unplugged and taken out in 10 seconds, fits in your pocket if you need to leave the jeep and dont want to leave it. They also make a home kit to use it now too.

I'm getting ready to get one...but I'm going with one that can be controlled from my Sony headunit...cause I don't want an additional display...
there are several options out their as far as brands go if you want to go the same route...I even believe Alpine has a head unit now with a built in XM tuner... just remember, if you go with an FM modulator, you're NOT going to get the "CD quality sound" that makes XM wonderful...you'll need direct RCA (or equivalent) inputs... We have XM in the Yukon from the factory and love it. Those bastards are like crack dealers- I wasn't going to buy it but they gave me 3 months for free, now I'm hooked. I love The Boneyard and the 80s channel, plus being able to listen to Fox News and stuff is great.

i will be sure to post back on this.. i figure i'll put this into the tuffy console, and seal that up so it doesnt fill up with dust, and wreck the cd player. hopefully this will make it last on the trails.

i just got an xm radio a couple a days ago. i love it so far. Went up into the hills(boonies) to test out the reception, i ran into a few dead spots here and there but that could be because all of the trees are pines trees and they block the line of sight to the satellite sometimes but overall it was a good investment. I got the fm modulator and hav good sound quality, i know its not the best it could be but i dont want to spend too much in somethin i might end up breakin out on the trail. i went with the delphi xm radio. hookin it up was a PITA cuz i kept blowing the fuse till i got all the wirin right. my fav channel so far it channel 48. i also hav a cheap cd player from best buy($50). i coulda got one of the newer cd players with the built in xm radio, but then i wouldn't be able to take out the radio and listen to it in my room(i lives in the dorms on base). I also want to ask where is the best place to mount the antenna on my jeep. I hav a soft top and right now i hav it mounted on the upper left, just above the windshield.

thats what all the antennas look like. i hav a magnetic puck too. i did hav mine where ur going to put urs but i couldnt quite get reception that well. Thats why i put it up higher just above the windshield. I think the higher it is the better.

![]() Erik, you should get good reception where you're at. I know for a fact there is a 3KW Transmitter in the local area that ensures a good signal. Cross country driving is good too, same channels coast to coast, regardless of where you are. Last edited by K9JEEP; 07-12-2004 at 09:50 PM.. |
