if you have a more effective method of letting it know it was wrong i would love to hear it. everything needs a good smack every once in awhile.

Is the dog young? If so, good job. It's kinda like a child. If you descipline it now with a little smack on the butt and what I call "The deep voice", later all you have to use is "The deep voice".

If I have to drill out another bolt, I'm just going to start welding parts on.

The dog is 2 and most times a really good dog. I was away ALL weekend helping a friend re-hab a house. Im partly to blame whereas I didn't get her out to exercise. I am a really calm person, and yesterday I gave my wife a glimpse of someone else and it scared her. Not to mention she is 8 mo pregnant and has an overload of hormones. I feel bad moreso about loosing my cool. The bad part is I have a nice soft top missing a window. &*$(^(^&^$(&*

It's all good man, sometimes you've gotta do it to show you don't approve of that behavior. I've had to give my dog a slap on top of the snout here and there when he was younger to let him know not to do something. Hit bit me really hard once, a firm (not hard enough to hurt him, just a quick firm one followed by "NO!") one to the top of his snout and he never did it again and still loves me. The dog will get over it man.

It'd be a different story if you gave her a falcon punch to the ribs.

For a second, I thought this thread was about Glen Beck.
But it's not, it's just about some guy spanking his dog.

"Spanking his dog"

When I saw the title I thought it was a thread about Nancy Pelosi. :barf:

Problem with hitting the dog is, he has no clue what he's being hit for unless he is doing the act when you hit him. A dog's attention span is extremely short.
Sux you hit him in front of the family. You need to address that more than the dog by far.

You think you are bad? Have you seen how some service dog's get reprimanded?

How long after the incident did you slap it? If it was right after then she will know it is for what she did, if not she won't know why you hit her. It has to be the following moment if you do slap them.

Sometimes we slap our dog, not to hurt it, but to let it know it did wrong. Other times he goes in time out (nose in corner and no one is allowed to pay attention, he has to sit with his nose in the corner) and whines while he is there.

A big THANK YOU to AmbuGrl and Mudvain for upgrading me.

Yes, I'm a girl, I drive a TJ and like to get it dirty. Yes, I like boys. Get over it.

By the time you got home, the dog probably didn't realize why it was being reprimanded... That's why the whole rubbing their nose if they pee inside, etc. theory has kind of gone out the window.

I've got a 1 year old sheltie that likes to push my limits from time to time. We leave him out for weeks at a time when we go to work and he's all fine... Then we'll come home one day to find that he chewed up the area rug or something like that. The one time I came home to find 8 of my DVD's chewed beyond repair, and another 15+ cases that were destroyed.

When he's bad... We put him in his crate. He gets the idea after that.

Post reported to PETA, you POS!!!

J/K. I have no problem swatting my dogs on the butt when needed. Never the face though. It is always at the time of incident. If past, then it's just too late to do anything. If it is a chewing incident they will get a swat on the butt, told no, then I give them one of their chew toys and give positive praise for chewing the chew toy. This is the best way I have found to teach them what is acceptable to chew on.

I remember getting pissed at my dog when she was a puppy (full grown, 1 year old that is). She would chew on EVERYTHING. One day I caught her in the act (she loved tearing up pillows), and she received a nice swat on the rear from me. Only time I've ever made her yelp. It sucks to do that, but she had it coming.

You're not supposed to use the crate/kennel as punishment though. A stern, low voice usually does the trick. You know the point gets across when their ears are plastered back and they can't look you in the eye for more than a split second.

You should watch The Dog Whisperer, that guy is amazing with dogs. When ever your dog is doing somthing bad just snap you fingers, say Psshh and quickly touch there rear leg ( or just touch them anywhere ). We have been doing that to my dogs when they bark, when you snap and say Psshh that lets them know that it is bad and when you touch them, it distracts them.

they aren't nearly as short as the ******* out there want people to believe.
certain breeds are smarter than others but they all can make the connection between something they did in the past and what's happening to them then.
