What makes hearing children’s laughter scary?
They’re giggling because they set something on fire.

I've seen them around here for $500-$600 frequently

Jeeps are like strippers...they should be topless as often as possible.

A hardtop around here goes for about $700 for a mint condition one and around $500 for a average condition.

It's a jeep thing...you wouldn't understand :)

Now, on the surface it isn't too bad. It almost looks pristine in the pics, and the description and price seem to back up that assumption. However, I went to look at it... My parents were also interested in my thoughts regarding the CJ listed. My emailed review was as follows:

Quote:
So, the guy was UBER talkative about every conceivable thing. He told me that the tachometer was the only gauge that didn't work. I asked about the fuel level, since I at least wanted to see how it drove, and the gauge showed empty. He said that it doesn't work either, and he didn't know how much gas was in it. Ok, no problem, as there were two 5-gallon Jerry cans on the back (more on that in a minute...). I hop in the seat, and reach for the seatbelt. Oh yeah, in 1957 they were an option? I asked, he said that they were in the barn, hanging up. Useful...

So, I fire it up and pull out onto the road. No functional speedometer. The tach, however, was pegged hard over at the max. And no temperature gauge. The heater worked, even at the full "off" position. Not sure if the lights worked. The power steering was fine, but the power-steering-while-attempting-to-stop-at-all worked better. I guess in 1957, "brake" meant "turn randomly". Unless the thought was to slow the vehicle by ceasing it's forward motion through the method whereby imposing drag on the leading front tire and changing direction of travel *should* slow you down relative to the speed you would have been approaching whatever obstacle you were un-aiming for...

About a quarter mile down from his farm, I'd decided that I had taken it far enough. I proceeded to turn into a parking lot (using the "turn randomly" pedal), and swung back out on the road. On the way back, it developed a hellacious shake somewhere between the front and rear bumpers, on the left/right side. I slowed down from whatever speed I was going, somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-65, by letting off the gas because I felt like avoiding hitting a pole and/or oncoming traffic. I said "What the f*** was that?!?!?", but out loud, I said "That was odd". Of course it's NEVER done that to him before. The steering wheel had a bit of a drift from side to side, but the horn worked. He was VERY proud of that. Back to the Jerry cans on the back. I knew they were full (were, past-tense), because the simple act of driving caused one of them to leak gas. All over. "Oh, it probably just needs a new gasket", says the guy. There was a little rust in places where to paint had flaked off, and the back portion was pretty banged up inside. The front seats were two notches past being shot to hell, and one of the knobs on one of the shifters was missing, replaced with a tap handle for a type of beer that I've never heard of.

He said that he had just pulled it out of the barn yesterday, but there were massive amounts of cobwebs attached to the tires and grass. WAY more than what you'd find from one night outside. The rims were in a pretty sorry state, and the spare tire was an exact match with the mounted tires while being a completely different tire. So not matching at all. Yes, all 5 were round and made of rubber, and close to the same size. Those are the only similarities that they shared.

The engine shook terribly at idle, but didn't really smoke all that much. In short, worth maybe 3/8ths his asking price, half at most...
The part I forgot to add was the part where he mentioned that 3rd had a bit of a "hitch" in it. What he meant to say was that the synchro was totally shot and he was trying to save a buck by not replacing it when he had the transmission torn down. He replaced first gear and the synchro on second, so why he skipped third I'll never know. Also, his clutch linkage was "custom". I like how he tries to justify his asking price though...
