Windows XP has me a lil' irritated...

I keep getting this when I switch through email identities..

How do I keep this from popping up? I tried checking the box and clicking cancel..
I do not want XP to compact jack!

Also, has anyone figured out how to keep XP from automatically opening an explorer window everytime you hook up an external device (IE digital camera)???
Same thing when I put in a CD full of pics, dam XP wants to do the thinking for me and automatically open an explorer window..

I've already gone into my computer and checked "Take no action"

This gets on my nerves!

I'd be irritated also, if I had to use XP, you should try OSX.

Just had to through that jab in.

Not sure I can explain this very well, but everything you download on your computer stays there forever. Email for example. All deleting does is remove the pointers to the files. We've all heard the stories of the FBI finding crap on computers of people they are investigating, haven't we? Really XP does this to me and it doesn't piss me off as much as it does you.

XP and OE in the same sentence, Gag me!!! OSX crap is only slightly an improvment.

I agree with Dana44, Get Linux installed and be done with it. Linux is the Jeep of the computer world.

your problem would be that you keep hitting cancel instead of OK.next time you plug in a camera or cd and it comes up click on take no action then click OK .when you click cancel thats what it is doing canceling what you check off.

and as for compressing the messages how many are you trying to down at a time i have gotten up to 200 with out an issue on my spam accounts.you might want to also try going into "Tools>Options>Maintenance>Clean Up Now"

try using some of the options:

Compact Messages
Removes Messages
Delete

this isn't complete true.its the idiots that don't know how to clean their computers properly that this happens to.yes you can have ghost files on your computer even after a reformat but a lot of what they show on Tv about recovering data of drives is a complete joke sorry

Yeah that way you won't have as much to complain about because you can only run 1/10th of the programs you can on Windows! Besides, he is complaining about the OS doing too much for him and X is a great OS, but gives you very little default control over your system.

Anyway, you can do two things for the first problem. You could select the checkbox and then hit OK instead of cancel. All this will do is compact your older emails. Or you could fool around with the autoarchive settings yourself and either disable it entirely or set it to something you dsire.

For the second one, you just need to modify your autorun settings for the player or drive for the different types of media you insert. The pic you posted shows your settings for music files but you need to use the dropdown to select Mixed Content and pictures and change that as well.

Music was just the first thing to show up on the drop down menu... I've checked them all to "Take no action" Still no luck..

Even better do a dual boot with Linux and XP, like me
That way you get the awesomness of Linux for everything you mainly do on a daily bases but if you are a gamer and don't want to deal with all the hassles for getting games to work on Linux just boot up XP!

exactly most have no clue .most just happily click away on anything that pops up on their screen without even reading what it says.

I tried doing that.. The screen flashed for 1/2 a second and nothing happened.. It didn't compress jack. I just like doing things manually when I feel like it. I don't want the OS doing the thinking for me..
