Windows Update make me log on to Windows

Jackyl, don't even reply, I'm not running linux and I'm not typing this using firefox.

I left my machine on to get updates for a few days and when I finally got around to rebooting it, I now get a log in prompt when I power on my machine.

This happened to my dad's machine as well but no other ones including my wife's.

Strange.

I checked profiles and there is only me and the default admin.

Anyone know how to turn this off?

Thanks,

If you go to the Control Panel, under User Accounts, you can set the options on how users log on or off. I believe you can disable it from there. This is Windows XP, BTW.

You can configure Windows XP to automate the logon process as long as your computer is not part of a domain (assuming this is your home PC and not). Here's how:

1. Click Start, click Run, and type: control userpasswords2
2. Clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer check box.
3. Click Apply.
4. Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with, and then click OK.
5. Click OK again and you're done.

Good Luck!

I love it how Windoze does what it wants to do, and overrides your previous settings. I personally have mine prompt me for a password, but then again it's always on anyway so I rarely have to. Passwords in windows are a joke though - get a copy of ERD Commander and you'll see what I mean!

Thanks guys, yes it's WinXP Pro and it's at home.

Any idea what caused this? Was it an update?

It's one of Windows XP security updates. It's supposed to help against hackers logining in remotely to your computer. Easy fix.

Except it doesn't delete windows for you - in short, it doesn't correct the problem but for a little while until the hackers find a way around it, which isn't difficult.

There ya go. It will most likely happen many more times in the life of your computer, so just get used to it. I get this question quite often at work from people calling in.

You can hack linux easily also if you don't know how to set it up. So don't rag on an OS designed for the non tech geek. And no, im not advocating M$ here..

Just doesn't happen as often because it isn't mainstream for scipt kiddies. You actually have to know what your doing...

Again, thanks for the help. I'm actually quite technical as I build PC's, game, and work for an ISP. It's just one of those things I couldn't figure out and I appreciate the help.

I followed your instructions and everything seemed to work just fine.

When I rebooted I now get message stating "Cannot log into Windows....make sure the password you are using is correct..."

I enter the password that I just created but it doesn't work. I have to hit OK multiple times and then it lets me in. However now it's not me, it thinks I'm a guest I think.
