Windows 7

Beta is officially out for anyone who wants to download it

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx

I've been using build 7000 for about a month now, more stable than Vista, faster than XP on the same hardware, UAC functions how it should....

its more like "what vista should have been" Vista was obviously rushed to market and to meet that timeline that had to rip out a bunch of stuff. windows 7 has all of the 'stuff' that got ripped out plus they've removed the annoying bits of vista

Can it dual boot with an existing install or does it want a completely fresh drive?

I don't know about the 'official' beta release, the 7000 version that was leaked (and what I'm running) had upgrade disabled.

but honestly it flies in a Virtual Machine with 1GB of RAM

So what's wrong with Vista? I haven't had any problems, all in all better (though not much) than XP.

I have Vista on my DD - driver support mainly - I have "vista certified" devices that dont work at all, Win7 brings better backwards driver support, it uses less memory at idle, and its less gimmicky

you dont have to deal with UAC (the pops when you want to run programs as a SU) either

Those are my major problems with it. My 8 year old machine, with all of it's registry errors, fixes and SPs runs faster than my buddy's year old machine that has 4 times the amount of hardware that I have.

He runs Vista 64, I run XP.
He's got some sort of badassed quad core AMD processor, I've got a single core P4 running at 2.33 GHz.
He's running close to 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM, I've got 2 G of DDR.

He's always talking about how Vista is better, but he's always surprised at the speed that my dinosaur puts out.
