Winches...how to afford?
I'm confused by something...and bear with me, I'm new to Jeepin.
How the hell is everyone affording the expensive stuff like huge lifts, Warn winches, axles and regears, etc. I make good money, actually damn good, but I still think thats a ton to spend. Am I missing the boat here and everyone is buying stuff used, or salvaged? I really want a winch and new front and back bummpers, but we're talking around $2200 for the good stuff, just for those 3 items. My jeep is only worth about 5k, and I have a hard time justifying that much $$$. Am I nearsighted here and forgetting that Jeeps are a way of life for some and their main hobby? Please clue me in, because if there's cheaper ways for me to get my rig trail worthy then I'm all for it.

Just dont think about it so much.....after you buy a few things you will be hooked. And what ever you do DONT add up all the money you have put into your jeep....

1) You buy your Jeep
2) You spend money on Jeep when you have it. 3) Things add up. Most Jeepers dont mod their Jeep all at once. Thats it ![]()

$2200 would buy you a nice welder, some classes and a pile of steel.

I'm swamped with honey do's and work as it is. I don't think I have time to learn a new trade. Hell, I haven't even had time to install the head unit and speakers I bought and remove the floaties and carpet. I just want a decent looking, non-stock jeep that can handle basic trails. As soon as I get rid of my 2006 Chrysler 300C in March of '09 I'm going to get a nice newer Jeep and mod it alot, right now I want to see a return of the money I invest since I only plan on having this jeep for about 18 more months. I know, I just need to quit my whining...will stop now. ![]() |

Hit the nail on the head right here. Unless you have thousands of excess dollars or like to rack up credit card bills, just save up for the mod you want, and then buy it. There are many deals to be had along the way as well- sales, good used stuff, scratch and dent items, and so on. I have a lot of stuff on my TJ, and it's pretty capable and built, but very few things on it were bought brand new. I keep my eyes open for good deals or people selling items as they upgrade and snatch those up. I got a near brand new Warn 9000xi for about $500 because the guy was older and didn't want it. Poison Spyder corners, tie rod and rock ring were bought used for cheap, etc. Just save up and grab the deals as you see them.

Spend less than $300 on a Harbor Freight winch, and $40 on a bumper plate, and keep your stock bumpers.
If you start wheeling where the strength of your bumper (and your inabilty to stop hitting things with it) becomes an issue, then you can worry about going to aftermarket bumpers. |

I just dont think about it. I get a paycheck every two weeks, and I spend it. Well, actually I don't really spend it anymore, I've stopped caring about my Jeep and off-roading.
