Wow, I'd hate for that to happen to my wife, so I'm glad to hear that your wife walked away. Sorry about the truck, but lucky it was a truck.

It depends on state laws about who pays for what. Farm states usually side on the farmer's side. Indiana had an old law on the books about hitting chickens and having to pay the farmer for them that I think was finally taken off the books last January 1st.

P.S. In my younger days I use to race a sports car through open range in Wyoming... and boy did I keep a foot over the brakes... lol

As promised...here's the pics.

And one of the culprits...the other is on the other side of the road.

Actually it depends where you live at. I work for a ranch here in South Dakota and in Western S.D. you have a free grazing law, which means an animal can graze anywhere on the ranchers property, so if there is a road going through the middle of the ranchers land, he doesn't have to have a fence up around the road. I agree that you make sure that your fences are up, but trust me 4 barb wires ARE NOT going to stop a 1400+ pound cow from getting out if they really want to. Even if it is brand new wire stretched as tight as it can be. There skin is about 3/4 of an inch thick so that barb wire doesn't always do a whole lot. Also, when your running a place thats a few thousand acres, you can't be everywhere at once. Also if it happened very early in the morning, you definately can't always know what might have got out at night. Also look at it this way, what happens when if you hit a pedestrian? They get the driver because the driver is the one to pay attention. I'm definately not sticking up for people who let there critters run around free, because I have a neighbor that does that and I'm always getting calls saying that we have animals out. I end up running them in and 2 hours later there out again. Most ranchers have pretty good fence to keep everything in, but like I said before, your NOT going to stop a 1400+ cow from getting out if she wants to get out.
