Glad she's ok. I was following a GF home late one night and she hit a cow with her Mazda pickup truck. She was going about 55mph and hit the middle of the cow with the driver side front corner. This caused the cow's rear end to spin and hit the drivers door. When this happened a spray of green cow sh#t exploded accross the truck. It was summer so she had her windows down. Totalled the cow, as well as, the truck, but once I saw that she wasn't hurt I laughed for a week because the inside of the truck including her was splatter painted cow sh#t green. It was in her hair, eyes, even in her mouth because she screamed when she hit the cow. Her dad knew who the cow belonged too and paid the man for it and we went down in the middle of the night and drug it up on his flat bed tow truck. He butchered the cow and used the meat to feed his hunting dogs. He would grill big thick steaks and burgers for his dogs!

I'm glad your wife is OK.

I always steer (pun not intended) my wife toward trucks over cars. People say that they are no safer, but I'll take crashing in a truck over crashing in a car any day. My wife T-boned an early 70s boat of a car doing 30mph and my 2 year old(at the time) kept eating his happy meal in his car seat. She was driving a 95 F-150SC.

The law in many places favors the owner of the cow. They blame you for hitting a dumb animal and hold you responsible for replacing the animal. You have a better shot at getting out of it if you can prove that the cows have a history of getting out and causing chaos.

No kiss or hug....matter of fact, she had to ride in the bed of my truck to her house.
Yeah....that's just the way people are in really really rural areas. The owner of the cow was a poor farmer just trying to get by and the girls dad figured since he was getting dog food he would give the farmer a few $$. I don't know what he paid for it, probably not what it was worth. Insurance fixed the girls truck and he had dogfood meat for years. Her dad wouldn't eat the meat because he said the guts were busted and would cause the meat to taste funny, but the dogs loved it.

You're kidding RIGHT??!?!? I'm sitting over here with half a mind to tell the owner of the cows what I think, about how his dumba$$ cows nearly cost my wife her life!! Damned if I'm going to pay him for his cows! Now if she was barrelling through his field or something, I could understand.

It just sounded strange to me. Here in Ohio, the farmer is responsible for damages if his animal is loose and causes loss or injury.

I'm not sure what the laws here in KY are on paying the owner, but my gf's dad just did it to be nice. He was not required by any law that I know of to pay for it, he basically bought the meat I guess.

Yea, maybe in India but here in the states its the farmers fault. He should have insurance on his farm for this kind of thing. I worked for a guy a few years back that had some of his cows get out into the road and one got hit by an elderly man in his Buick. His insurance company took care of it, but if he did not have any, he would still be paying for it today.

I agree. People should be responsible for their animals. I have heard (when I was a kid) where people had to pay for the animals. This may have happened 30-40 years ago before the laws were changed.

Here in Ellis County, a goat escaped while being unloaded at a vet's office by I-45. The goat caused a wreck that killed a truck driver. They are considering pressing charges against the goat owner or the vet for manslaughter charges. Last I heard, they were still arguing over who had custody of the goat at the time of his escape. The vet's assistant was helping to unload the goat from a trailer.

Yeah I would definitly be calling a lawyer. It's pretty negligible for the farmer not to fix the fence and contain his animals. I would call his ins. see what they say. **** trying to be the nice guy your wife could be dead!!! In Iowa we were always responsible for accidents caused by our livestock.
