Why you need a roll Cage!

Diet Dr Pepper can not a beer can LOL
Look at these pics guys/gals 1 guy got some stitches in his head where his head popped the cage & broke his shoulder, the other guy i think with the Dr Pepper didnt get a scratch on him, just your generall banged up routine... they rolled 5 times

whats missing from the cage tho ? how about the outter spreaders

even a cheesey cage is better than nothing.. i got these pics from another club i'm somewhat associated with

They go from the top corners of the windshield back to the outer edges of the center roll bar hoop....JP

not stupid at all, its no big deal

look at the 2nd pic, you see the windsheild hoop & the seat hoop, you'll see 2 bars in the center tieing the front & rear hoop together< called Spreader bars>, you see inside spreaders, there should be outter spreaders somewhere around where the bends are going to the floor from overhead

maybe i'm wrong, but it doesn't look like the center hoop is high enough?

I notice how the spreader bar turn down to meet the lower center hoop, but on most Jeeps I've always seen that the center hoop was the tallest.

My inner spreader bars have to turn down to meet the lower forward hoop.

Look at the last pic, now look at the bar to the rear fenderwheel from the back Hoop.. it angles, that should be a straight 45. after rolling 5 times you'd be bent out of shape to LOL... the cage collasped a little, like its suppose to

Just to clarify so we do not have a false sense of security aren’t most vehicles from the factory “like jeep wranglers” and most after market installs “into pickup beds” referred to “show bars” due to the fact that they doe not pass thru the body and attach directly to the frame thus the name show bar. If attached to the frame it would then be referred to as “roll bars”. Show bars do not give protection and in fact can be dangerous due to the unpredictable directions they will move during impact because they are attached to sheet metal not attached to the frame like a true roll bar that does protect you.

That is why until I can afford to install a roll bar into my TJ my factory show bar is nothing more than a place to attach speakers, soft-top, and fire extinguishers.

Again this is just to clarify so novices do not go into a situation feeling safe and secure due to show bars.

Be Safe

never heard of them called ShowBars, but i see where that terminology can come into play

a roll cage can be described in 2 ways,
1 where it ties into the Frame making it solid OR
2 where it is designed to break away from the vehicle & you are actually inside of the " Cage" < similar to Drag racing, except the frame & cage are all one peice>

my best freind in highschool had a 83 Yota 4x4 on 35's had that light bar or show bar on the back, he fell asleep & hit a culvert at 60 mph & flipped 3 times.. that so called show bar/light bar saved his life.... he was lucky very lucky
i can see how they isnt really a set direction for one of those to go

Thanks for the enlightment GenX

as far as the Orange Cj above, it is tied to the frame, altho its not the best cage it atleast worked & saved there lives

I've seen the stock TJ/YJ cage work before.

Personally I'd rather have it installed into a reinforced section of the body like the stock one is, then the "frame tie in" that most after market kits use. I trust 4 bolts on a plate spreading the load out more which is the same exact way the seat is attached then the one bolt and a body mount that people use and say it's "tied in". Also if a body mount breaks on the tub, I'd rather have the cage stay with me in the tub then the cage staying with the frame.

If you dont have any faith at all in the stock bars, then you better figure a way to mount your seat better as well, same goes for your seat belt.

Jesus, not to change the subject off safety, but i wish there were some pics of what they rolled off of! cripes, look at that blood. and what a nice rig. vortec, hope it wasnt a 5300, i want to be the first to do that swap... but geez, with all the time and thought that musta went into that jeep, i cant believe there arent outter roll bars, i mean, if for no other reason, they give you somthing to hold on to (not that you want to hold onto those in a roll over, but you get what im saying..)

does bring to mind this last weekend however, i brought my girlfriend wheeling for the first time over memorial, and i was quite proud of her. for there were 2 moments all weekend where i did come very close to rolling, and instead of screaming and flailing, she (white knuckled-ly) held on to the hand hold by the glove box and kept her arms inside the vehicle. just as i had explained to her before we left for the trip

now that shes got safety down, i gotta train her to be a better spotter so we dont get in those predicaments!
