The band Rancid said it well "Let California fall into the f**king ocean!"

I like California by way... the surfing and snowboarding is increadable and Big Bear and Snow Summit rule. I will be back this winter.

Yea, Bear is my home mountain. They have amazing stuff there now. During the holidays it sucks...too many damn people(no offense if you are one of 'em.). Ever ridden at Mammoth? Should definately be on your list for a place to ride. You can ride for days on the backside of the mountain....

Most southern states are poorly educated.

I have not checked out Mammoth yet but that is on my list. Maybe my friends and I can head there too this season. We usually head to Utah or Vancouver but want to head to Cali again this season. I really want to save up some funds soon and spend a season up at Whistler/BC. It is so big it never gets crowded - except the Olympics may change all that.

California's environmental regulations would be a plus.
Alabama is much better now but when I was growing up I can remember seeing burning tires/trash in the back of a tire store...pollution, ya think? However, the fire dept was on hand to ensure it did not get out of hand. Even at a young age it seemed to be such a waste...the pollution could be seen from miles around (thick black smoke).

Birmingham has bad pollution problems as it is a bowl shaped city...the carbon monoxide just settles...not a city I would live in!

Huntsville is a nice clean city, with many attractions that are mostly funded by the abundance of governmental (or related) jobs.

About the "hicks", while we do have our share of "hicks" most are just country folks that (for the most part) are some of the nicest people you will meet. Imo, a nice country "hick" is much better than a "thug". At least if you have car trouble in the south and someone pulls over to help you can be assured that they are there to help and not cause harm.

Education has been a hot topic for many years. We do not have the tourist revenue of other states and since "we" decided against an education lottery we just do not have the money to support good education programs.

And the number one reason to why Alabama doesn't suck...I will wave at you when I pass you in my Jeep

I grew up in So Cal and thought it was the best place on earth until I lived somewhere else. I have lived in a few places now. I had to come back to So Cal becasue of work, I will be leaving as soon as my contract is up. Now that I have lived other places I can say CA is the worst of places that I have lived. It is crowed, over priced, rude people, and the worst drivers. Their priorities are out of wack. I was only in Alabama for basic traing for the Army so I really don't know much about that state.

I shouldn't complain to much about CA, my house has gone up about 40% in the last year and a half. I should leave here with no bills and over a 100k in my pocket.

That is a bad thing about Whistler - you don't want to go home after at the end of the trip. The terrain park at Whistler is almost scary - some of the kickers are over 20'. There are great bowls and if some great spots you can access by hiking a little. The locals are very friendly there too. Great - now I wan't to go to Whistler this season too. I need a rich girlfriend.
Tahoe looks awesome - one of these days I have to head there too.

I have lived in several different states in all different parts of the country and what I have found is that the ratio of good people- to -morons is about the same in all of them. I have also found "hicks" in every state I have lived in, no matter where it is geographically.

Im in the environmental consulting business and alot of the Republic of Calis enviro laws are knee jerk and worthless. In some ways they are better but over all they are overkill and serve nothing more than to drive up manufactureing costs.

Ozone actually...CO would simply kill you. But the shape of the Birmingham valley does have a bowl effect and the air gets rough once or twice a year. I still love it here.

hicks are everywhere in every state. i probably qualify as one. BTW if your in birmingham and break down on the side of the road and someone stops to help you that doesnt have lights on the top of their car...run... trust me on this one.

A more fair way to assess this is to look at the schools across the country. Public schools most everywhere are subpar. period. If you want your kids to get a good education, send them to private school. I do.

Mammoth rocks, and been there countless times, but with the new Village that Interwest put in, it is more crowded than ever. I used to love Canyon Lodge, but the gondolas from Village go to there, so it is a damn madhouse.

Whistler would be nice, but I'm looking forward to snow in the Rockies this year vs Sierra snow. I'm thinking: Park City, UT, Crested Butte, CO, or Jackson Hole, WY.

Keep moving forward. But keep an eye on history, for if you don't, you are doomed to repeat it.

Yea, Mammoth has gotten a little more crowded. I just never go down to the bottom of the mountain...thats usually where all the lines are huge. And never go on holidays! Thats pretty much how it is at every resort now....

Can't go wrong with Park City....went to Utah last year for 2 weeks for my first time and it was a blast. Would love to go back.

Jackson Hole is also on my list. Heard its just freiken awesome there......
