Wheeling at the Beach

O.K. so yesterday I went to Assateague Island Md, I got my ORV permit for the year. I found a Coconut on the beach which is not from this area so I figured it must have floated here from the Carribean. It was really cool because the shell was worn smooth from the surf, and sand. I kept it. put it in the passenger side floor of my Jeep. Spent the day Wheeling on the beach. I saw the wild ponies, a few sika deer, a snake, and a lot of birds. It was a little cold, and windy out, but clear skies. All, and all a very good day. Later that day on my way home very relaxed, driving along, listing to Sheryl Crow CD, Just thinking about how good it was to get out, and wheel a little I hear a very loud BOOM! I pull over thinking it's a tire, get out, and look. Tires are fine. I look under Jeep, see nothing out of place. I open hood, still nothing. I have read stories on the forum before of members having problems with their Jeeps while driving along so I am thinking that it's my turn. Still not locating the source of the Boom. I check guages, tires, engine, under Jeep, everything I can think of. Look down Hiway behind me to see if I hit something. Nothing. So I get back in Jeep to leave still puzzeled by BOOM I notice a slight sweet smell... MY COCONUT EXPLODED!!! I guess all the time it was floating in the ocean, and lying on the beach it had become very cold. Putting it in the floor of my Jeep, and having heat on low heated it up, expanded the Coconut milk inside to the point of rupture. I gotta tell ya, scared the S#!t outta me. I could not help but laugh about it the rest of the ride home. No real damage done just a mess of coconut goo on the floor mat, and the thought of some fat guy crawling around his Jeep like some kind of chimpanzee trying to find source of BOOM. Anyways, just thought I would share my story

I had something similar happen to me, my first year in Phoenix. I left a six pack of Coke in the back of the car, during the 110+ days of summer. As I drove home from work, I heard a boom and thought I had hit something, or been hit by something. A moment later I looked in the back seat to see it covered in sticky brown fluid. The added vibration of driving must have been just enough extra pressure to blow the can.

Jeeps as chemistry labs. What a novel idea.

I tell ya what, I don't know how old the coconut was, or for sure where it came from, but the coconut milk was so thick, and goo y that it looked like somebody busted a nut in my floor mat. Oh by the way, first mod, or add on to my Jeep was Huskey molded floor liners. thank god.

Sadly it was before I got into Jeeps,but I'd have loved to do the beach trail run.
You've got to love the isolation of Chincoteague/Assateague. We'll be back maybe this year,it's been a while and we miss it

it took about 5 min to recover from that one...

Hmm, sounds like a personal problem to me. I think its time for somebody to go to counseling. Hmm, wheeling on the beach sounds like a good idea though. Too bad its an 8 hour ride and about 2-3 tanks of gas to get there from here though...

Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate? Coconuts are tropical! This is a temperate zone.

I hated being stationed there. I had just turned 21. One bar in town, an hour drive to go to a mall or see a movie. Seemed the reverse of "Children of the corn" No teens or 20's people around, just older people.
