dachsunds or however you spell it have long spines and are thus sensitive to being jarred around. I would buy a harness for him at a pet store, and make him lay in his bed in the back of the jeep with raingler nets on. Being in the front seat is just too dangerous with anything but full doors. I had mine in the front with the half doors on and the top down..and I had one hand on his collar almost the whole time just in case, but that was on the highway. Try that while wheeling

i wouldnt suggest it....i forget the statistics but like so many out of every 10's back breaks just from the mere length of their body. my friends has two and they came home one day to find the female helpless in the living room w/ a broken back. they arent the best dog to take in a car period i dont think...

I have a Yorkie and he loves being in the Jeep. I only take him in the Jeep with no door and no top if I can hold him (make my husband drive) or if it's just around town and I'm the only one in the car, I put him in his little travel crate in the back. Here's a list of car restraints from PetSmart http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_list.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302 023689&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032887&bmUID=1091119263578
I haven't ever used one but they look like they'd be pretty safe and comfy. The only thing I'd worry about is the dog getting car sick. If the dog can usually ride around without getting sick, though, it's probably not a problem. |

These have been around for awhile and are supposed to be great for open air vehicle dog restraints:
http://www.muttslinger.com/whatis.html http://www.muttslinger.com/Photos.htm But yeah, I'd look into getting some foam from a camping store, cut a slit half way down the middle, and secure it around the anchoring point.

I wouldn't whip out the weiner
![]() Not a good dog for wheeling. You might as bring a small Lhasa apso. Good trail dog is large enough to be seen, can ride in the Jeep or scramble with the rocks staying out of the way. Also remember, there are a lot of dog casualties while wheeling. Rubicon trail even has it's own dedicated graveyard for them. I will not bring neither of my mutts unless it's going to be a smooth trip with few Jeepers I know. |

I always take my dog wheelin'! I have a Blue Heeler and he will destroy my house if he knows I went wheeling without him! I have a heavy duty harness that he wears and a strap that's attached to the center roll bar. The strap is just long enough for him to put his front paws on the fender flare. Yes, he likes to "surf" the Jeep while doin' 65 down the highway! Wierd..
Only dog I know that has been run over 12 times! He loves it.. ![]()
