I really enjoy my TJ, and it has been my dream vehicle for many years. However, with the wife and 2 kids, one which is in a car seat, the TJ is just too darn small to take everyone out anywhere. We are probably going to be getting a bigger vehicle in 6 months to a year, so one of the Jeeps is going to go.
It seems like it's cheaper to mod an XJ, but the TJ's seem more capable. Plus I'd love to be able to take the family out with me. What do you guys think?
I have an uncle with the same issue, except he had a TJ and a ZJ. He sold the ZJ and kept the TJ and he also has 2 kids. He takes his kids with him in the TJ a lot but now he tells me he wish he kept the ZJ. I asked him if its more fun with the top down...but he said he only takes the top off a few times a year anyways...and that its much more of a pain moving the front seats back and forth EVERYTIME he goes somewhere. If it were me i'd say keep the XJ...but I might be a little biased It all comes down to your personal preference...you can also tow more with an XJ if you decided to get a camper and go camping with your family...
Take the tj money and lift the xj and chop it right. So you have the room of an xj, capability of a tj, and open top/doorless feeling of a cj/yj/tj/lj/jk/and now xj
i saw you have a 99 maby selling the tj and buying an older model xj from the early 90s
im curious as to your reasoning on why a TJ/LJ is more capable than an XJ. Please list facts.
The only thing that a TJ has over an XJ that may provide any sort of "capability" benefit is, uh, maybe a frame. And it doesnt make that much of a difference anyway.
I'm in Near the same boat. I have 5 kids 2 grown. if I want to make wheeling or just just go out and bust old roads the XJ is the only answer for me. I also feel that with kid involved the XJ is safer but that's my opinion. Before I do any hard wheeling I will cage it from front to back. Later once more of the kids are grown maybe I'll get a "Jeep Jeep" or If I catch a deal on one I will grab it up and start wrenching and getting it ready.
If you've never wheeled an XJ before, you should give it a shot. The longer wheelbase makes quite a bit of difference in ascents and descents. I've driven both Wranglers and XJs and the XJs just feel more stable.
