What's with the Hemi??

What is with the Hemi??

I have 3 Jeeps. So I am a real Jeep fan. I have a 2000 GC Limited, a 1998 Wranglre TJ and a 91 Cherokee.

I was all excited about the new Hemi.

I read all the rave reviews on Edmunds etc. Everyone said it was a neck breaker for power?

So I went and drove one. WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT!!! My 4.7 has more power than the Hemi.

Also, what is with the seamless transfer between 4 and 8 cyl operation?

I tried it out 5 times. Always the same results.

I was going about 50 or 55 in high grear at about 2000 rpm, I then stomped it for passing gear. The rpms went from 2000 to 5000 in about 1/10 of a second then right back down to 2000 and then it took off in passing gear? What gives.

I'll keep my 2000 GC Limited with the 4.7 before I'll get the 2005 GC with the Hemi.

The salesman said that was all the Hemi had.

Help. Am I missing something?

Thanks, tj

i personally have not driven one of the new hemi's, but i would imagine its not any better than the magnum v8 chrysler has been using in their vehicles (318, 360), i think they are just using the reputation of the classic muscle car engine name as a sales ploy, i had a magnum 318 in my dodge truck and it was a great engine

i havent owned one but alot of my other forums i read owners complaining about that too. however they all said after the break in period the engine came to life, and they were no longer disapointed.

LOL dont make that post on any ford forums everyone i read they just hate on the Hemi you wont get an educated opionion, however most the other forums i have been on all say wait till after the break in period.

if you go to Howstuffworks.com you can read about the Hemi, and how back in the day it was awesome, but with more advanced technology being used in nearly all motors, the Hemi is out of date, and does not compare to the newer motors... Hemis are nothing more than a sales ploy.

Thanks to all who gave me an answer.

I kind of figured that most of the Hemi talk was just sales pitch, seeing as though the people like me (in the 60's) couldn't afford a Hemi. and now we can.

The engine hype is kind of the same in all companies.

Gee, I got a Cleveland in my Mustang!
Gee, I got a Winsor in my Mustang! SOOO? Just the town where the factory is.

I have the North Star System: Just a registered name of a product.

I have a (how many remember this one---) Rocket 88!

I just want a real V8 that has some honest power. The 318 was the best, but the 4.7 is ok too.

actually, they are quite different from a metalurgy standpoint. cleveland blocks are age hardened. once the parts are cast/forged, they are sat outside on racks for a year and allowed to rust, then they are machined and cleaned up. winsor engine parts are hardened by a quick carbonizing/heat process. the age hardening seems to hold up much better.

its like saying a 4bolt main and 2bolt main chevy smallblock is the same...but those few bolts make all the difference

Hemi engines were so popular because of their build potential. todays general consumer doesnt think about modifying the hemi in their new car. but the reason the hemi's were/are so much better for modifying is because of their superior valve system, and their centered spark plug location. i beleive the old ones were 3 piece blocks also, not sure about the new Hemi's though.
