I am looking at getting another one for me in OD. the 380 surprised me because of its small size it kicks harder than our 40 SW.

here in ny every county is different. The pistol permit you hafta get to even hold a handgun specifies that it is a concealed carry permit but my county(erie) says that that implies i can conceal carry while at a target range or while hunting. Two places where there is no need to carry anyway cause you already are in possesion of a firearm. The counties around me when you get your pistol permit you can conceal carry.

New york you need a permit just to go to a gun store and hold a pistol. You don't even want to know the firey hoops you hafta jump through to get a permit. Takes about 1 year and $200. Can't even buy handgun caliber rounds at bigger stores without a permit people who buy pistol caliber carbines get screwed. And in ny the assault weapons ban is still in effect it was never lifted

I think I need to go shoot some more Glocks or something. I've tried out my sister-in-law's .40 (sorry, not familiar with models) and I just didn't like it nearly as much as my XD. But the popularity of Glocks has me thinking I'm missing out

Nah, your not missing anything, I shot every 9mm glock the range had and none of them compared to the XD9 SC I ended up buying. This of course is my opinion, but I just didn't like the way any of them felt in my hand. The best gun is the one you're comfortable with.

I have an XD-40 Subcompact. I love it. While looking for something for my wife, we looked at the Glock 27 (.40 cal subcompact). Neither of us liked how the Glock felt in our hands. It just wasn't as comfortable as our XD-40 SC. So...we bought another XD-40 SC.

That's what I keep telling myself I guess I'll stick to what I know and more importantly what I can shoot comfortably and effectively.
I've had my eye on one of the new 3.8" XDMs recently

I carry an XD-40. When it's the summer time I carry a Taurus .357 617 model.
Love me some XD action, my girlfriend has a XD-9 sub compact and it's a great shooter for someone with a smaller frame.

I really like shooting my glocks, I've shot my friends XD but I didn't like it as much. The safety on the handle is a little wierd but it's a good gun.

it's the Glock grip angle many don't like, it's a German design with a similar angel to the lugar. the glock is a fine weapon, and operates smoothly, just a matter if you like the angel. most who don't like the glock like the XD. I don't care for the glock at all. andyone who likes the XD needs to go shoot a 1911; but be carful you will want one, as there is no substitute for a fine 1911.

This is coming from a 1911 guy, I'll just get that out of the way. I like "metal" guns. I tried for a LONG time to NOT be a Glock fan.
Since I have taken a job that encourages me to CC a handgun while I am at work and my interest in personal defense has increased, I have examined several options of carry guns. My job is partially a "gun shop" so I have held and shot MANY guns.
I eventually came to the Glock for a few reasons.
1. The Glock is lightweight. So is the XD. Having my favorite pistol(Browning Hi-power)on my hip all day was a drag.
2. The Glock has no external safety. Like Forest Gump says: "It's one less thang" to worry about that is. I have taken several NRA courses on personal protection and have drilled over and over again. Not having to work a safety on my firing stroke is perfect FOR ME. Not having an external safety does not bother me at all, especially since I learned how the safety mechanisms work in the Glock.
3."Barrel height" It seems to me that the XD is "too tall." By that I mean too much of the gun sticks out the top of my hand. Seems stupid, but it bugs me.
4. The grip angle referred in a previous post. For ME it's perfect. I think it helps me control recoil. In my NRA classes we were required to put several rounds on target at high speed.
5.My final reason is the "slimness" of the Glock grip. It makes it easier to conceal and doesn't stick out so far. My Hi-power is really bad about that.
CJATE makes a VERY good point. In MY opinion 1911 design is the pinnacle of handgun design. I think you could give Helen Keller a 1911 and she could bring it up and the front sight will be sitting right in the notch, every time. But when it comes to carrying them around ALL day they are too much.
I think 10achik said it best though, Find a gun you are comfortable with. A gun that that "points" well for you. By that I mean that when you bring it to the shooting position the front sight is right there and you don't have to "search" for it. The only guns that do this for me are 1911 style pistols, I had to "learn" this with the Glock. Kahr's are really good pointers for me too.
The last consideration I made was concealability. I think my next purchase will be a medium frame Glock. Probably a G20 10mm. I have been reading a lot of Col. Jeff Cooper's books lately, he championed that round but availability of ammo is leaning me more towards the .45.
The last thing I want to say is this. Having a gun makes you no more armed than having a guitar makes you a musician. If you have the time, look up your local NRA certified instructor and take the Basic Pistol, Personal Protection Inside the Home and Personal Protection Outside the home. You will be AMAZED how proficient you will become with a pistol. Seriously.

I think SA is missing out on a lot of potential sales by not having the manufacturer develop a compact 9/40/357 model. The G19/23 is probably the most popular GLOCK and SA has no comparable model.
